Double Bass dpa mic

I'm not going to jump on this particular band wagon until Chris or someone else of that caliber decides to take the plunge. I love and admire Rufus Reid ( I even had a lesson with him once) but until I can hear one and play through one I'll wait. I've had very good results with my AMT/Realist combination through a two channel Walter Woods MI-400-8 and even better sound using that setup into a Walter Woods Ultra.
Combined with the older VL-108 0r VL 208 it's a great set up for me.

thats cool. im just hoping someone else will drop the cash and test it out! im looking for an easy, portable mic solution for live and recording, but the amt didnt work for me. didnt like the sound and feedback issues so i got rid of it. dps makes nice mics in general, so hopefully this will be nice. i like the miniature "shotgun" idea, but only real life testing will be the true judge...
so hopefully either chris or toad will hurry up and buy one already... im surprised they've resisted this long!!

in the video the cat from DPA says its the first mini shotgun...superior rejection etc...Sounds promising, but in my humble opinion there are 2 different kinds of gigs: those that you can send a mic FOH and those that the mic goes thru your amp....I am starting to think that the later is just one big headache. But maybe this is the magic bullet that will eliminate the pick up....

look at the graph for freq response. it goes by distance from the source, and its flat at a certian distance (not looking at the site at the moment) . im sure we could get that on a bass somehow. rufus is doing it. if people can string up a mic with broccoli ties then they can hook that thing up i know it.

Sounds very natural on guitar, I'm very curious how works on Upright. DPA build wonderful mics, the question is for me, the gain before feedback and the bleed.

That's very encouraging. The picture with the smiling putz with a nice bass shows the mic strapped across the width of the bridge. Nice. At $600 I think the price is good too. After having shoveled more than that into an AMT I don't use and can't sell I'm a little reluctant to just throw $$ down but their reputation is very good and worthy of experimentation.

In Europe you can get much better price to this DPA mic than AMT, since the DPA is an European company.

I think the AMT doesn't worth the 999 € ( you can buy Neumann KM184 for 645 € ) , I have a friend who uses the AMT on stage, it's a very good sounding mic, but he says it doesn't has more gain before feedback and less bleed than many other not upright bass dedicated cardioid condenser on the market.
The DPA 4099 seems much better deal in Europe.

Having an AMT in my life for awhile and never getting it to work right, I replaced it with a cheap Sennheiser dynamic mic that totally kicked it's ass and was less than half the money (at the time).

I can trust in DPA products, they build wonderful mics. Most of the DPA mic was problematic, since most of them are omnidirectional, but now this mic is supercardioid

The design of the DPA 4099 is very interesting, is a mini sized shotgun microphone, the shotgun microphones are known for the very little bleed.

I must apologize for getting toad hooked into this thread! But, I have seen patitucci twice recently using this mic and his sound was sweet. Once was with just this mic clipped to a stand, and once along with 2 other mics. Both times no pickup. I. Don't know the ratio blend he was using on the 3 mic setup. It sure sounded nice though. Maybe ill take the plunge
I'm saving up for their better mic. Lots of bread. 4021, I think. I've used it before and BY FAR the best live mic I've used. Better than Schoeps and a K184. Or my beloved ATM35.The sound guy made a mount with thick rubber bands. The low end limit of the mic you're talking about is 80hz? Hmmmmm
Yes at 80hz, but I think you can get the bottom when close micing!
The 4021 is must be a better mic, but the gain before feedback and the isolation, maybe better with the 4099.

well, when i heard the mic it certainly had plenty of low end, and it was definately within 10cm of the face of the bass. so at that distance there seems to be a little proximity effect according to the chart. alittle low end roll off might be in order.

I find that that is usually the case as well.
I rarely use a mic unless it's going to the FOH. Would be nice to find one that was practical for more varied situations.
Most of the time I use mics to send to the house systems. I tired few times micing with amp, but I find very problematic.
I do this all the time (Grace mic preamp, Flying Mole poweramp, and Glockenklang cab), and although it is not as unproblematic as a pickup, it definitely can be done. Right now I use a Neumann KM 185 with an Xplore Audio H-clamp, and I am wondering whether or not the DPA 4099 would be an improvement over the Neumann...
