Dr.Bass vs. Avatar vs. Low Down Sound

Emprov, well clarity & punch are pretty important to my sound. And if the very basement is still pretty darned good, which is what I think I see you saying, then I think I'm pretty close to giving them a go myself. Hope to maybe see your "official" review in the next week or so, if you get the time I mean. Thanks man.

Here is an email that I sent to someone who asked my opinion....check it out....

Hey man sorry for the late response. I do not have any experience with Avatar cabs, but I have read great things about them on Talkbass. I got hooked up with Marc at Dr. Bass cabs through ebay right when his company was getting started. I called him on the phone and he really knows his stuff and will back up everything he makes. He has made 2 cabs for me (and a 3rd on the way) and 2 custom cabs for the guitar players in my band and these guys are tone junkies. I know his Website is not as detailed as others, but I think it is a small operation and he just doesn't have time to update it. I feel that his guys spend more time on their products. I think he has been told that he needs to put all of his stuff on it (he has many other cabs that are not on the site) and he needs to put more specs for the tech junkies. Marc had a custom cab for a Gibson Goldtone made and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. These are high-class guitar amps and Marc and the guys at Dr. Bass built some high-class cabs. I suggest you call Marc and talk to him. He is a good guy, a good bass player, and he will back up his stuff. I have the lowest priced stuff and I love it, but my guitar players have the Birch serious guitar cabs (both totally custom) and they are very pleased. I think for the price you cannot beat it. Like I stated before, not having any contact with Dr. Bass or Avatar, it sounds like these 3 are doing some pretty serious work.
My experience with LDS is second to none. I just happen to have fell in love with a Epifani 3x10 Ultra Light cab, but the day his version of it comes around (oops! :eek: didn't mean to say that!!).....I mean, IF he develops a cab like that I'll own two!!
Don is also pretty good about not wanting to just ride the current wave of bass cabs and be known as a good "version" of something. He also recognizes what are just trends and what are designs that will be sticking around for awhile.
As easy as it would be to reverse engineer a cab, he wants to try and find something that will "put him on the radar" so to speak.
But damn, his 2x8 is crazy good sounding! It's on my very short GAS list.

That LDS Ampeg-ie 6/10 looks abnormally awesome, especially with the MAG mounted right in there. I wonder what 4 12's and my ABM 500 would be like in a box like that...
On that topic, which make/model of 12's think ye all would fair the best in this kind of enclosure? Of the neodymium ilk?
On the other hand, LDS is pretty far off, and I do have a friend closer to home who'll be building cabs fairly soon...

Also, what qualifies something as "long-throw"?

Oh my god does the LDS 6x10 "fliptop" sound good, and stupid freakin' loud, I mean STUPID FREAKIN' LOUD!!!!!!!!.

It's not my first choice tone wise (more Ampeg-ish i woild say) but it gives it up real nice. And I have never heard a louder 250 head in my life. I'm sure the cab has a lot to do with it tho!

Long throw refers to the excersion or how far the speaker actually moves back and forth. If I have my info correct, a longer throw usually equals higher power rating and lower frequency rating (it can go a little lower).

I am obviously biased in my opinion on this subject. But I am just glad that you are considering purchasing a cabinet from a company like us here at Dr. Bass, or Avatar, (I have spoken with Dave and he is a super guy) and LDS. Companies such as ours have to work harder for your business, but speaking for my company, the suggestions and comments from all of the people in this forum have made us better and more accountable for our products, in addition you enable us to compete with the "Big Boys" while offering you professional products at reasonable prices. I know just to come up with the line of products we offer, took over 18 months of testing and over 150 different designs, many of which were directly attributed to suggestions from our customers. And regardless of which company you purchase a cabinet from, I have no doubt you will be getting a quality product. And as a working bassist myself I am constantly on the lookout for new ideas. So your suggestions, and honest criticisms are always appreciated. My sincerest thanks to all of you.

That's the config that Marc recommended. I guess he's in the camp that believes that the larger speakers should go on top for bass rigs. Don't know much about the sonic principals of it but I've talked to some pretty good sound guys who sit on both sides of that particular fence. I haven't put the smaller cab on top yet but it sounds pretty darn good as is, I'll have to try it one day just for grins and chuckels. Also, with the rack space built into the larger one, I can just grab the single cab and take it to rehearsals. It's got an amazing amount of volume for such a small cab!

I don't really like the way it's set up. Weight wise, the amp should really be in the smaller cab to keep things equal. Aside from that, it's really cool... looks like you have a 5 way setup. You're right about the woofer on top though, it can in fact go both ways. On the one hand, putting it on the bottom would get better transference to the ground. However, that's not always desireable, especially on a hollow stage. You'll get a tighter, more focused sound the way you have it set up.
