Hey TB fam!
This year for my 30th my wife bought me a 1989 (my birth year) DR Heartfield bass. They have been discussed here before, for those not in the know they were a Fender brand manufactured in Japan at the famous FujiGen factory. It has a thin layer of carbon fiber between the fretboard and the neck which was supposed to be a stabilizer, and a pretty interesting tone knob that can be a classic roll off or a Q sweep sort of like on Alembics (or so I am told). It also has two outputs- 1/4" and XLR.
Anyway, I just got this bass fixed after a cable came loose in the electronics and brought it to a rehearsal last night. Plug in and no sound. After some investigation, another cable came loose so at this point I need to I think rewire the whole thing, and since the preamp IMHO is one of it's weak links, thinking of just replacing it all together. Anyone have any recommendations for an onboard pre that would work well as a DI as well? Since the XLR is there and I don't really like dealing with pedals, could pack a pretty serious pre into the electronics cavity, there is even a separate cavity for the battery. Was thinking maybe John East or Michael Pope? I kind of don't mind thinking outside of the box with this bass so if I can fit an onboard pre that works as a full DI I will absolutely do it.
