Per interwebs search
The GTX was based on the Belvedere, and was differentiated by a blacked out grille and special rear fascia, fiberglass simulated hood scoops with optional racing stripes, a chrome "pop-open" fuel filler cap, and a tachometer mounted on the center console. The GTX was positioned as a "gentleman's muscle car".
I imagine finding parts for the slant 6 are a bit cheaper as well. Probably what really happened to the original engine...Yours looks like a GTX then except for the grille, must have all been added, I'm pretty sure they were all 440's or 426's too. I saw a '66 out here once with a slant six in it, the owner had taken the original motor out, gas is expensive here.
