for long rests, try not to look bored 
at a concert last friday i had 8 bars rest about 4 times in this one song, and my teachers in the front row were (very badly) concealing their laughter at how bored i looked.
it was an informal carol/christmas concert, and apparantly in some of the carols when i had just one note every few bars, i looked like animal in the muppet treasure island when he wasn't allowed to play loudly
