Everything is much clearer, thank you. :) Honestly, it's beautiful kit, but aimed to a specific customer, and like you say, probably not luthiers! I'll mention though that TalkBass has really specific and tightly enforced policies around what constitutes "spam". Soliciting interest in a product that's in development probably comes pretty close to walking a fine line in that area, so it may actually be worth checking in with the moderators as to what you can and can't post. This will save you from the ban bus. :D

The busiest subforum on TB is the Basses forum, and you'd probably get some more end-user discussion going there. That said, it's moderated closely, so you'd have to be careful about being interpreted as spam or promoting as a "commercial user" or shill for same. There were problems with this in TBs past, hence the very close moderation we have today. :)

Not that I need a stewmac wire bender, but its still $175. Expensive. I assume these things can do whatever radius is desired from 7.25 on up? Quality can have a certain look and the G-tech one looks nicer. Never used it so speculation. You can always offer $173 to see what happens.
 
Stewmac has terrible shipping charges. If you don't buy their yearly shipping fee, most likely the shipping will be more than the item you are purchasing. Stewmac has their _hit together for sure, but not a perfect model. I mainly go to stewmac for info.
 
I'm not saying that 55$ is too much for a well made jig, it's just that using screw-mounted tuners would save me the cost of the jig plus the effort to buy and resell.

There's probably people who would buy this, but they likely don't hang out in the luthier's corner.


Like what kind of tuners? Cheap junk? If u have a Fender, don't you want to have the best tuners of high quality that you can? Super accurate tuning, super lite, looks great. If you have a 72 Jazz bass worth $5000, I would install the 4 screw tuning pegs which I have done to my 2004 Geddy Lee. All depends on what you have and what you want. Probably works on a MIM. I can't see a problem with this on a consumer point of view yet. I am not a luthier. That would be like a local pizza joint that buys frozen pizza's and selling them for delivery lol.

I will soon have one of these that I can lend to 10 people. Five Luthiers, and 5 Joe's. I would like feedback/review of the device and package. I would like to get the device back since it will be #1 and it could worth millions some day!!!!!!! A free way to install, the cost ... a review. It can be in depth or not. Thanks for looking.
 
Interesting idea, I honestly have no idea what kind of demand that would meet.

Personally, if I had to mount those, I'd successively mount one at a time and tap it with a mallet to create impressions of the holes, mark the centers, drill them out with a forstner and mount the tuners.

I'd think the prospective builder/buyer would probably meet a few criteria:
- building Fender-style instruments or at least instruments that would accommodate that hardware in that specific configuration;
- willing to put Fender-branded hardware on their instrument (don't mean to be facetious here, I personally would not since there are so many other options);
- if they build, they'd likely also have the skills to make the jig themselves as well, so it would mostly be a time-saver
- build necks with these frequently enough to require a jig for this process (as it's relatively quick just marking them with the mallet method)

Alternatively, the prospective modder/buyer would possibly meet:
- have an existing neck that could work with the jig
- want to use these same 2-pin tuners
- would prefer to use a jig than just tighten/mark/drill (this could be lots, many people prefer the reliable precision of a jig)

There are a lot more models that are 2 pin, will any or all of them work. I don't know but I suspect so. This seems to be a Fender configuration that will be used moving forward. They are trying to push the technology of instruments they make as well as accurately reproducing vintage. Thanks I know a lot about bass, but not a luthier.

I’m a regular guy on this site. I did a lot of tinkering with basses and I would not pay that much to mount a set of machine heads.
The mallet method seems the simplest, but if I felt I needed some kind of guide I’d print a layout template on some shelf paper I could index off the first and last capstan holes, with all my hole centers marked. Once lined up, stick it down punch my centers, then head for the drill press.
If I was thinking about taking a job like that to a pro, I’d likely be doing so because I was afraid of trying it myself, or couldn't justify tool cost for a single job, i wouldn’t pay $55 for something I could get done with a bucks worth of sticky back paper and a little of my time.
it’s a slick little tool no doubt but it’s not something a lot of people would lay out the dough for. They would be quick to borrow it if you had one, but they would not buy it for themselves.
Last, what does it index off of? How do you keep the pin holes aligned from hole to hole.

Again this is not for people that can already do the job themselves. Ive been playing bass for 40 years and I can't do what you are describing. I guessing I am not the only one on the planet either. I will try to get your last Question from the maker. What do the people that are complaining about the price think, how much would you say it should sell for?

I just went through the painful process of manually marking the index holes and installing these same genuine Fender deluxe tuners on a brand new neck few weeks back. It wasn't fun and I hope never to do it again.

The distance between the 2 pins and their location relative to the center point of the tuner hole need to be precise which is difficult to do when using the pins themselves to mark the drilling location on the back of the headstock. There isn't much leeway here since any deviation will be exacerbated by the threaded ferrule which ensures the tuning post is centered in the tuner hole. The other end of the tuner needs to be supported by a shim of correct thickness so that the tuner is flat relative to the headstock in order to achieve accuracy using this method.

Few comments while they are fresh:

1. This jig seems like it would have saved considerable time. Time = $$.
2. If I had to install these tuners on more than 1 neck I would consider this jig.
3. The price seems reasonable for the hobbyist doing >1 neck.
4. The inclusion of a hand drill is a nice touch for all-in-one package.
5. The "F" Stamped Fender Deluxe Tuners are very nice and of high quality, IMO better overall than Hipshot ultra-lites at the expense of increased weight + added installation difficulty.

Thanks for your incite and how difficult it is to install some tuners, I couldn't do it and I work on computers for a living lol. I got a new Ultra bass with these tuners installed and I instantly wanted to trade out from the Hipshot tuners that came on my USA Deluxe 2009 and install these. These are great tuners and the BT12 is a good looking useful device. I don't want a frankenfender I Want 100% Fender .....

I am actually trading out the Hipshot ultra-lites tuners for the fender. Way better tuners and not that much heavier that I notice. Again, pay attention to peg hole diameter. Those Ultra lites have a smaller diameter for the peg Than some fender parts.
 
This is my jig package. It will be ready to ship to reviewers next month because of current constraints on me. Please post names of individuals wanting to borrow/ review. First 10 get the job!!! when you get done you have to ship to the next person out of your own pocket. Probably cheap as hell, package fits in the palm of my hand. I will send to the first person out of my pocket.

I see that there hasn't been any activity on this thread in over a year, but I'm wondering whether anyone has used this jig package and reported in TalkBass about their experience. I've just bought a new Warmoth neck and a set of the Fender #0992006000 Deluxe Fluted-Shaft Tuners. The neck is pre-drilled with 11/16" (17.5mm) tuner holes, but no pre-drilling for the tuner pins. The tuners are brand new in a factory-sealed package, but didn't come with any template for drilling the holes for the pins. I don't have access to a drill press, and I don't have drill bits suitable for this task. So, since I'll have to buy some new tools anyway, I'm thinking that I might be willing to invest $54.99 if I can have confidence that this will work precisely for me. Has anyone used it yet?
 
Perhaps it would appeal to somebody. But I cannot fathom who would really use such a device. The casual user could do the job well without such a device. A shop like mine would mark the pin locations without a template. And someone who was producing enough instruments to need a template fixture would far more likely make one or rely on their CNC machine.

Sorry - I just don't get it.
 
Looking at some responses where folks have said how difficult it was to lay out the pin holes accurately - it's really quite easy. One way is to use some lipstick. Put it on the tips of the pins. Put the tuner in position on the peg head and press the pins against the headstock. The lipstick will mark exactly where the holes need to go. Need help lining up the tuners on the headstock? Lay them in place and place a ruler along one edge of the tuner base plates- that will line up all the tuners. Clamp or tape the ruler in place. Remove the tuner and apply the lipstick. Replace the tuner aligning it with the ruler and press the pins against the headstock. Your pin locations are marked and the tuner will be properly aligned.

The mistake that many people make is to try to measure the locations. You don't need to know the measurement. Use the tuner to show where the holes need to be.
