Drive pedal instead of overdrive?

Clean boost?? There's plenty out there, but here's one of my favs.

I use my flipster as a slight boost / tone box instead of a true OD or dirt box.

That's really vague, ether or not you realize it.
What you're looking for is a pedal that can produce a mild overdrive. Problem is... I still have no idea what you want that to sound like.
Can you describe what you're looking for or provide a soundclip?

"Overdrive" is a process that can be anything from subtle to extreme. So saying you're not satisfied with "overdrive" because it's "too overdriven" doesn't quite make sense. I'm guessing you meant that you have a pedal which has the word "overdrive" written on it, and it sounds too distorted for you. I'm guessing a Boss ODB3? 
Anyway, there are loads of drive pedals out there with every possible degree of dirt/saturation/grit/growl/fattening or whatever other "drive" tone you might hope for. If you can post a very specific MP3 or Youtube link to the sound you want, we can name off some options. Also state your budget.

For a cheap mild overdrive, look into the tube sound fuzz that James is building. I really dig mine for a leave-on-all-the-time grit, and prefer it that way to full blown overdrive. Maybe I'll do some soundclips later.
DOD 250 preamp pedal works pretty well to get some subtle grit. Its good for the money too-About 30 bucks
The Xotic RC Booster might be a good choice - I mainly use it for clean boost but you can get some "mild" (over)drive from it. However, it might be a touch out of your price range as it's more "Flipster"-range (nice clips, James! 
) than a Boss/DigiTech/stompbox. ($200 new, around $150 used.)
If it's simply a clean boost you might want to look at a cheap EQ to set flat and boost the gain that way.
