Drop B tuning???

Try dropped c, much better sound on bass. although one of my fave aussie bands plays in dropped b and they pull it off really well (it gives awesome crunchy sound). i suggest trying dropped b with heavy guage strings and if that doesnt work just use dropped c

I looked through most of this thread and some of what I'm about to say has been said, but I don't think it's all been said.

On a 4 string you could do like Paul Gray of Slipknot did and get a set of power slinkys (55-110) and drop the tuning to B F# B E.

The other option would be to buy a 5 string set (and discard the G, leaving you with a BEAD set) or get a 4 string pack like DR's DDT strings, which is a essentially a 5 string set without the G. If you do strings such as these (ballpark 65-130) you could tune the B to standard, then tune UP the E to F#, the A to B, and the D to E.
Going that route eliminates loose/rattling strings altogether (if that is the sound you're going for, I'd recommend going the 4 string power slinky set or something equivalent to that). Just be careful because depending how your bass is setup, the size of your nut, etc. it may not be a perfect match.

My band decided to do some songs in that same tuning and, after considering my options, I ended up just using a 5 string tuned to B F# B E G#.

Hope that something in there was helpful.

Drop B tuning is C standard tuning but dropping your lowest string down to a B, so the tuning would be E,B,F#,B highest to lowest. If you want to tune your bass this low your going to have to go out and buy yourself a set of heavy gauge string, probably about 55-110. Some bands that use this tuning are Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen, Skillet, Slipknot, The Devil Wears Prada, early Bring Me The Horizon and heaps more. Hope this helped, cheers

I tune to drop b on my 4 string. I replaced the e string with a b ( involved the tiniest bit of filing) and kept the rest of the strings the same except tuned them down to f# b e.
I done this as the guitarists of my band have tuned down to b and it's easier to write the new material when i'm in the same tuning.
I considered badg but it's alot easier to play the songs we're doing in drop b. I just bought a 5 string set and missed out the e and i find it works good.
