Drop D for one song?

Surely if a backup is needed for the standard tuned bass, another backup is needed for the bass tuned to D? Just in case that one dies just when you're about to start the critical one song in D. You can never be too careful.:D

A large meteorite could crash into the gig and go completely through the center of our earth delivering impending doom. In the mean time practice your bass like a MF!!!

Pretty simple. They talk for a bit and you just tune your top string down a step to D only takes a second. If you want check that the other strings are in tune and get back to rocking. When your done they talk a bit more and tune that string back up. I really think your over thinking this and making it a issue. Most bands take tuning breaks. Or use it as a excuse to go get a good affordable import 5 string and get a new toy but it seems even on the cheap end to be a expensive solution to a problem that doesn't really exist.

I agree, but if the person finds trouble doing this they need to practice it. Boring, yes. Necessary, Yes

I would go with the hipshot BT12, contact them for compatible. I think a BT12 would work. Flip the switch, it's a low D string. Switch up and now you have a low E string. Tested with a strobo tuner. I got mine on Reverb for like 89 bucks. Easy install if you have the dual pin configuration.

Late to the party: what's the tune in question? I'm lazy and would play an octave up but also launch a harmonic just to add context. In my universe, nobody would notice.

Not much of a fuss, trying to install the best Fender tuning pegs on my 2009 USA Deluxe Jazz bass, replacing factory installed HipShot I guess they did it to
to save weight. This bass is already very lite. Putting these tuners on is not going to be noticeably heavier.
