Drug usage among musicians

We could all benefit from an even greater legacy-if Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and others had recorded much more, and spent much less time in the throws of addiction.

I don't get this post. How much more could Miles have recorded? He took a few years off at one point to live isolated in his house, but he is one of the most recorded jazz musicians of all time.

I don't think you are being too cynical. I have often thought drug access and supply may be a tool record execs have used to keep artists under control and dependent. I have no proof and I am not accusing anyone, but I could sure see it being a possibility.

Huh, I never thought about it that way, I only went as far as to think they were supplying coke or speed or whathaveyou to ensure (in their eyes) a good show.

If you are sleazy enough though, the same stuff could indeed be used to keep your acts loyal and under control. Opium des Volkes kinda thing. Nice thought. Well, not really nice, but good that you came up with it though.

If you're bitter and paranoia enough, you could extend this thought to the entirety of western civilisation, with stuff like TV, facebook, fashion, drugs, and other stuff acting as the opium. If you're bitter and paranoia enough.

EDIT:...but that's kinda derailing this thread and besides politricks are a banned subject here, no? So. Yeah.

Am I reading this right if I say you mean that you'd have liked to see those guys sober not because you wanted to see them healthier, but because you wanted to wring a few more drops of music out of them? That's kinda selfish, isn't it? Even if it would "benefit all".

Weed, can exasperate Mental health problems, In fact, anything to do with how your brain fires or anything like that, I mean I had weed at a Festival and gained a small Stutter, My Girlriend has Bi-Polar and it made her massively worse, I mean if she hadn't had Weed she more than likely wouldn't have Bi-Polar to the extent of that it is now, due to Weed she hears voices and I know people that are actually just wasting away on Weed. I can see the benefit, of having it once in a blue moon, But it can seriously damage you mentally.

I was just thinking about this yesterday; I wouldn't be surprised if certain sleazy record executives would demand their act is on stuf like cocaine and give it to them, to ensure a good energetic show that night. Nevermind the artist will have to pay the price for it later.

Then again, I may have a somewhat overly cynical standing here.

Actually thats not too far off base. My ex brother in law was Mark Kendall from Great White. I was told that, allegedly, when they were in to sign their contracts there was a big pile of coke offered to them from the executives. Its not for things like ensuring good energy at the show, it was to keep them out of their right minds so the label could get their way and ensure control.

You may now Burn me at the stake

You didnt have to provide the matches and kerosene...

Honestly I think that Drug usage actually hampers your creativity. You hear people say getting high makes you creative, but I think it just makes you enjoy things that are normally kind of boring because your looking at it from a different perspective... your high...your brain isn't functioning properly...duh.

If you have to be high to enjoy someones music, IMO it's not all that good to begin with. I'm the only sober one in my band, and I get to listen to this crap all the time...ugh "It's sounds good, your just not high enough to enjoy it".

The irony is that the things I used to enjoy when I did drugs, aren't nearly as impressive now that I've been sober for many years. I can see through the fog of stupid much clearer then before.

And for the record, contrary to popular belief, Marijuana effects those around you a lot more then you might think(friends and Family/ band mates). Because they have to deal with you being stoned and acting ********. So a little harmless pot may not seem harmless to you, but it effects your social life, family life, work etc... Most of the time though, the offender is too high to realize it unfortunately till it's too late, then there's always some other excuse why something went wrong.

/semi rant

Im sorry, but there was probably a lot more going on with your girlfriend than bi-polar disorder. The weed didnt do that to her. Did you stop to think about why you gained a stutter? It was probably due to paranoia, causing you to think too much about what your were saying, that caused you to stutter.

Im not trying to call you out or flame you or anything. I just feel the need to dispute misconceptions about marijuana.

So its not that drug usage has gone up or down, its just that you don't hear about it in mainstream media as much as previously, due to the general lack of actual musicians in the mainstream media to begin with.

Plus, it's not interesting. "Everybody knows" that musicians do drugs, so who cares? It's not news any more, it's boring. Now, if some politician does drugs, that's entertainment!

Now, that whole "not used so much these days because we all know about the dangers of gateway drugs" thing is as silly now as it was in the '60s: a) it's not true, and b) fear of the "gateway" drug hasn't stopped a single person I've ever met. :) Seems to me that the big-money stars are all doing OTC drugs and then going to expensive rehab instead of dying, while the non-stars are doing exactly the same drugs they always have.

In general I don't care who does what as long as they play well and show up on time. But in general sober people sing in tune, stoned people play less-interesting solos, and smackheads steal and are to be avoided. So maybe you don't see a lot of hard drug users in mainstream bands because nobody wants a band member who steals their stuff and plays boring solos.

i know a few peeps that are bi-polar & they never smoked. & man are they messed up. i smoke & i know way more sober people that are wasting their life more than i am.

i don't know about more or less, but t mind expanding forays into psychedelia of decades past have been replaced with mind numbing, highly addictive bummers of the cocaine, crank, opiate variety.....

i can't say that the mind expanding stuff did much for anyone's playing abilities, but i do think that it was a time where exploration was encouraged and there was an ocean of new ideas to discover.....so much has been done now that finding a new idea is extremely rare.....

Actually, I think that the drugs are the same, but the intent is different. Its not a self-exploration process, its the search for a good time.

FWIW, I don't know if drugs make you more or less creative. I know they certainly cause you to look at things differently, but I, for one, cannot do much of anything when I'm using the drugs properly.:p

My 2 cents worth:
It seems that the quality of the drugs has vastly improved, while much of the musicianship has not.
In my case, I could not funtion on stage with the weed of today compared to 20 - 30 years ago.
But then, my being an old codger doesn't help.
I have been performing since I was 14, and will be 50 in 2011.
My advice, burn after the gig, and never grow old!

+1 to all this.

All the research I've done on Marijuana never led me to find anything conclusive saying that it causes bi-polar disorder. It doesn't lead to schizophrenia or anything like that either. What it can do, is cause toxic psychosis, which is also very rare and must be ingested in large quantities.

as for me, making music in itself is a natural high.

my opinion... people who do music under the influence of substances are fake and not IN for
the music.

drugs=suicide
why would i listen to someone who wants to kill himself??

just sayn'

What I meant when I said when I dont know why people cant just stick with weed was doing it in a social setting or when your winding down from the day. I am against doing it when Im practicing or playing with other people. Whenever I am and try to play I just get frustrated I cant pull of the same stuff. Weed does not make you more creative. Ive never done it but ive heard from friends lsd does but also I heard from friends they dont feel the same after they did it.
