OK, this isn't bass related, but it's not OT either, so I thought I'd put it here.

Has anyone's drummer tried one of these?

Our drummer is interested, and I thought I'd buy him one, but would like a real world review/opinion on it first.

Any thoughts?

I know a few drummers who use them. One of them tuned our drummers kit with his and it's never sounded better, even with old heads on. I'd say they're definately worth atleast trying on your kit, but from what i've seen (And heard) they work really well.

I use a standard chromatic tuner. I have my drum set at the synagogue tuned to G major. Top heads of the toms advance G-B-D. The bottom head of each is a 5th below the top head. The snare is tuned to the floor tom (D). The bass is tuned to the high tom (G).

We use one in my band... and let me say, it made a world of difference to our overall sound rather than just tightening heads.... =D

For toms, tighten just above the wrinkle point. Use the drum key to strike the head at each lug to get the harmonic. Adjust tension at each lug until all the harmonics are the same.

I have used one in about every situation imaginable and I love it. Studio, stage, basement, my drum set, rental kits, and other peoples kits. I love it and I own two of them.

I do know how to tune drums very well but this thing makes quick and quiet work of it. Especially if you are back stage while another band is playing and you need to tune up the drum kit you just pulled out of the -20F degree trailer and onto the +105F degree stage. Or if you are just in a huge hurry.

You do need to tweak the tuning by ear after using it but it gets you so close most people wouldn't be able to tell.

I am amazed at how many drummers do not know how to tune their sets or have never heard a set that is in tune. Maybe they just like that duck taped dead tone?

It has some tuning suggestions that come with it that are ok, but you really have to play with it. It really depends on what type of heads you are using and what type of sound you are going after. Once you get that figured out you will have some repeatable results to fall back on when you need to.

It's one of those things that (unless you know someone who has one or see/hear it in action) seems like it might be a frivolous expense or of questionable real-world value.
Good to know it's worth getting.
I wish there were Canadian distributors, but it seems we're a little behind the times up here!
