Drum micing question

One FOH guy I know mics the top and bottom (the latter phase reversed), assigns the top to the mix for the main snare sound, and then uses the bottom (gated and keyed off the top mic) exclusively as a plate reverb send.

In other words, top = the clean, unmuddied crack, the bottom = the reverb wash arriving a few milliseconds later. All the tone, none of the "far away" feel.

The two gigs we did last week the sound engineer did this. I must say the snare sound was exceptional. In fact, everything sounded superb, great mix and a lot of positive comments about my playing from strangers afterwards :D
