You could also do a double darkstar jazz with a P neck. That way you can move the pups a bit back so the neck pickup won't be so muddy.

I'm considering a tri-DarkStar bass as you describe. The cost per pickup makes it hard to do

I'd rather have the rear pickup closer to the bridge. I had DPLEII Lakland P ( (P bass, Jazz neck, Darkstar) that absolutely killed. Had to sell it though.
