There is older Versions with 2 channels and Newer With 3 channels.
Either would work for high distortion.
The Newer 3 channel would have more possibilities of getting cleaner.
Since it was the intent of the design to have 2 traditional channels for high gain.
And a new 3rd channel for less gain and cover a broader range.
I used the old 2 channel with stereo Rickenbacker, Modified to not go to separate pickups.
It worked for distortion. I thought the whole clean bass amp, distorted guitar amp would be cool.
Its better to have everything distorted. Sounds funny hard to balance with clean/dirty.
Was told Billy Sheehan uses dirty and clean, and uses different compression levels to make it work.
Special Pre with 2 separate effects loops. Makes sense. But I hate compression and dont want to deal with 2 different heads.
For all tube Mesa Bass Amp I prefer the 400 not the 400+
400 is 6 tubes
400+ is 12 tubes
For a rackmount tube Amp its pretty much trouble free.
Only thing that hurts, is the 400+ is way to Hot in a Rack and Way to many Tubes.
Very Costly for re tube and not fun to current match
Compared to the Ampeg type Rackmount tube amps, Mesa is way better. Ampeg Lots random problems
and the power transformers get very very hot in a rack
Its what is great about the old 400, trouble free in a rack.
Only good Ampeg Rack Tube Amp is very very Old SVT-II
They spaced out the tubes better towards the back.
And being racked the Fan hits directly on the power transformer.
Which is the bad thing about the later models, tubes are tightly spaced near
the transformer, and everything cooks in a rack.
I generally don't like too much compression with bass either, but it's a natural artifact of distortion. So the idea of adding compression to the clean channel is an effective way to help the clean and distorted signals integrate better when you mix them back together. I am a fan of dual channel processing, although I don't use it frequently.
I totally agree that carrying around two amps is too much hassle. I have pretty much done it all to include Ric-O-Sound, Multi-Amping, and Biamping. It was fun, I learned a lot, and I don't generally use any of these approaches any more. But hey if you're young, strong, and motivated, go for it!
Regarding cost to retube 400+ VS 400, the difference is probably not as big as most people think it is.
6550 cost about $42. 6x42=$252
6L6GC cost about $23. 12x23=$276

IMHO choose based on the sound you want. Some like the 400 better and some like the 400+ better. The 400+ is said to have a bit more headroom, a bit solider lows, and has more of an effortless feel to it...like it has massive headroom. Regardless, many people prefer the 400 and there is nothing wrong with that. Given a choice, I would pass on both and get a D180
