dual volume control question...

I guess a new thread is in order for this one. Preface by saying that I can more or less follow wiring charts, and solder connections that are clearly marked...but I have very little understanding of how all these components actually work...

I have been thinking (actually ordered some parts) about replacing my pickup selector switch with dual volume controls. This was no big deal on my J-bass...but when I really looked at the ASAT/L2K wiring, it was...different. I suddenly realized that while one white wire from each pup goes into the pup selector switch, the yellow wire that comes out does not go to the volume control, but to the treb-tone control. It seems to go

Treb-->bass-->Vol

...and from there to the pre & output.

So how the heck do you wire dual vol controls? I sort of get that the white leads from the pups need to go one to each volume control...and that one lead attached to both needs to come out...and go...where?

The dual volume pots replace the selector switch, so the white leads that connect to the switch move to the wiper (center lug) of the respective volume pots. The output lead from the dual pots connect where the yellow lead from the selector switch currently connects - treble. I have no idea why G&L does does the tone stack ahead of the volume.

The problem is what do we do with the black wire that runs from the bass control to the current volume control, which really needs to come out of circuit. My read of the stock circuit says that the thing to do is just connect it directly to the white lead and not worry about that pesky little .0002mfd cap.

Yes- On mine, I just have the black wire from the tone controls wired directly to the 2 white leads from the (now gone) volume pot (one to the preamp, and one to the active/passive switch) sans the "treble bleed" capacitor.

OK, It's starting to make sense to me now. Connect bridge white lead to the top center lug, and the neck white lead to the bottom center lug. Connect the output lugs together and to the yellow lead from the pup selector. Black lead from the "bass" pot that connected to vol, now connects to no lugs on any pot, but rather to the two white leads, one that goes to the A/A/P switch and one that goes to the pre. Lose the treble bleed cap that was on the old single vol.

I think I have it. Now I see why Ken maps these so thoroughly. Will do the same. Even if I basically get it, I have an almost infinite capacity to get myself confused.
