So, I've been playing in this band for the last seven years, and it's been a wild ride. Musically challenging and fulfilling, plus it has provided me an incredible set of experiences; I had never toured internationally before, but this band has taken me to Ireland, Scotland, England, Cayman Islands, and most recently, Jamaica! But when I tell people to come see a show, and they don't know the band, they inevitably ask "Oh, what kind of music do you guys play?". And, well... it's complicated! But, the answer is like the thread title says. One the one hand, it is very traditional roots reggae that will touch on anything from nyabinghi, mento, ska, one drop, dub, or dancehall. But on the other, it is also a Scottish folk outfit; flutes, whistles, accordions, fiddles, and bagpipes will all feature. Once you meet the bandleader, it all starts to make sense; his parents are from Scotland, and his mum was a bagpiper who taught him all the "trad" music. But he grew up in the Carribbean diaspora area of Toronto, and all of his friends were from Jamaica, who indoctrinated him into the reggae world by the time he was 10. Fella by the name of Jason Wilson, which is what the band goes by, too.
Typically, a lot of our songs lean one way or the other, with little sonic elements to bridge the gaps and stitch them together. But we've been working on a new album for a while now, and I'm excited that we've got a song here which, IMHO, truly fuses the two elements together. Most of the tracks are in various stages of completion, but this one is nearly ready for mixing; lead vox aren't the final take, but all the instruments have been tracked and edited. A mixing session will really make this pop, since it isn't really balanced/levelled exactly right, but I'm pretty pleased with what's come out on the track, even in this state! So I wanted to share with the class
