If you get a chance check out Duck, Cropper and Joe Walsh on Clapton's Crossroads DVD - a real treat. (Forgot who the drummer was, but he's a player as well)

Actually, Duck plays with a number of other performers as well but doesn't get much camera time.

I was able to stop by the Stax museum last year, Duck's p-bass is on display there. I have "Respect Yourself", a documentary on Stax records. It never occurred to me that Booker T and the MGs were contoversial. The film said Memphis was incredibly racist, a half black/half white band was almost unthinkable. When people ask me about my influences I tell them I'm the bastard child of Paul McCartney and Duck Dunn.:bassist:

Yes, JOHN Crapper was the toilet guy.

STEVE Crapper is the treble counterpart to one of the best pocket players of all time.

the MOTHMAN beats them both as he has 4 arms with which he plays both bass and guitar at the same time in perfect, supernatural time and groove.

Stop it! The man's name is spelled Cropper.

I watch my DVD copy of The Stax/Volt revue Live in Norway every few months for inspiration. Cool live tone through his Marshall amp, you can really hear how he shapes his notes.

Really instructive to see how he and the band shift gears and change the dynamics and feel constantly to support the various singers. They really could turn goat's piss into gasoline if they chose to.

+1. There's a place for everything in music. To me, when you hear the latest hot lick player it's very impressive and exciting, but that only lasts till the next great hot lick player comes along. Kind of like being the fastest gun in the old West.
I prefer players that work together to make great melodic songs. I'll listen to that over and over again.
