Duck is/was a Fender Bass pioneer. The white version of Jamerson. An all-time great electric bassist! A REAL electric bassist and not the soloist crap type bass players like we have today. (We all know their names!)

This book, written by my friend Tim Tindall, is a must have. Tim is a great guy and a great player. The transcriptions are a real insight to creating GREAT bass lines

I got to see Duck with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 2000. CSNY with Jim Keltner on drums and Duck on bass. My seat was right above his roadie's station an a little to Duck's left. Great seats for an arena (Chicago United Center) show, and the sound was very good. I was struck with how physical he is when he plays. And they did an impromptu encore of Nash's song about the Chicago 7 trial, "Chicago". No rehearsal because for the first verse, Stills is showing Duck the chords!!! And I thought I was the only one who did gigs like that


"What Duck Done" is every bit as valuable a resource to me as "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" and the DCI instructional video from Jaco Pastorious. Get it and study what it has.

I really enjoy Duck Dunn (and the songs of that era), but I do have one funny story to tell.
Back in the 70s I read where Duck played "vintage" strings - that they were something he was into and a part of his sound. I have no idea if that statement is true or not, but that's what the article said and as a young impressionable bassist I tried to imitate him. I don't think I changed my strings for a number of years because of that - they were so dead that I can remember a number of times driving cross country to play a gig and opening the case and the thing would not have changed tuning whatsoever. But at one point I became frustrated because I couldn't get my Fender P (through an Acoustic 370) to sound as good as some others I was hearing. Finally one day someone asked me how old my strings were and they were so old I couldn't even remember the year I had bought them. I tried a new set and it was like "Oh man, this thing really rocks".
Not all advice is good advice.

What a great thread! One of the greatest bass players I think. As some one else said, Duck played the bass .... like its supossed to be played as far as Im concerned.

Now..... What was the song in the BB movie at the end, when the guy told Jake and Elwood, about the electrical duct tunnel they could use for thier escape? They just motion for the band to keep playing as the bolt out. Thats a great jam, love Ducks bass in that one! Might not have a name, could be just a twelve bar jam, I dont know.. Thats bass playing, so simple, but is so damed sweet!
