Duff McKagan......Sound

Bla bla bla jaco Wotan bailey all a bunch of lames. Write a good song your so damb great. All the talk I hear about the fancy crap, soloing and so on, go play guitar then. Its all crap and certainly not rock and roll. Elitist

Haha dude. Jaco had more rock AND roll in him than all of the 80`s hair metal bands combined (that is if you insist calling them rocknroll which I personally doubt. As far as I concern they were mostly just boy bands in drag).

Ladies, ladies... lets be civil.

Im not so sure I am even understanding where all the emotion is coming from. Seemed unwarranted.

I am a bass snob, but I don't like the guys that one cat was referring to as elitist. What does that make me?

I don't think a bassist wanting to perform a solo means they wish they were a guitarist either. If a concert celloist performs a solo, are they secretly wanting to be a violin? All instruments I believe deserve a solo at some point... except the triangle and cowbell. A solo just allows a person to break the in-box restraints of the everyday band and make something artistic from the soul. Be it something like Sheehan or Mike Kroeger.

At the end of the day its about what makes you tap your foot and release the tension.

Oh and 4 posts in a row? ***?

U mad bro?

For The win!

I never understood why people hate on successful bands/bassist that aren't uber-talented. Every band is different in their needs/wants. I do not at this point in my life have the time to put in to be anything other than an mediocre.......mediiocre bassist. (another Sherman reference for those counting at home) Do I have a problem with those who put in the time to be great? Hell no, much respect. But at the end of the day, my soul is moved by simpler, blues inspired music, not huge chops. Not everyone is like me and I'm ok with that. On the subject of Duff, he's been in 3 bands that have some degree of success. Obviously he's doing something right.:bassist::bassist::bassist:

OK I'll bite. There is no way I could end a day and listen to Jaco. Never. Not enjoyable not rock not roll. Nothing. To each their own but to even imagine having to listen to him play bass and enjoy it is beyond me. He just didn't seem to be having fun when he played. To serious. Give me Duff anyday.

Interesting that Bailey is mentioned on a Duff McKagen post.

:D:D:D

Personally, I think McKagan is one of the most overrated bass players today. There is nothing new or innovated about his playing. The same can be said for most of today's rock bassists.

What about Wotan? ;)

I like that band he had, the Wotan Clan.

Who said you had to sound new and innovative? Writing a good bassline is enough. I think he had a few. I think though that he also had a great tone that made it so you could actually hear the bass and he was in very popular band...these will ensure you will have a lot of fans.

It certainly got worse in time with rock. It used to not be that hard to hear a bassist that had a decent tone and decent lines. Nowadays everything i hear basswise in the rock/pop world is just so boring. It's like nobody's even trying anymore.

Youre right there. I LOVE Duffs Tone and I LIKE some of his GnR pieces, but he stands head and shoulder over the guys making the big bucks today. Mike Kroeger of Nickleback is one that comes to mind. A lot of the bands that are getting airtime now dont even EQ their songs correctly so all you hear is vocals and guitars like "Pop Evil, Volbeat, and Pretty Little Things". Thats when the rock stations arent playing RAP like hollywood undead and linkin park.

You have to look at the time that. Duff was doing what he was. It was hair band time, it was all the same cookie cutter crap and the bass sucked if it could even be heard. Duff made the songs move and groove. He brought back a stones/ aerosmith type of vibe as did the whole band and at a time when no one was really doing it! His lines/ fills were very cool. Nothing crazy yet made the songs move and THAT is what a bass player is saposed to do. There is nothing new, nothing inventive, its all been done and the fancier it gets the quicker it gets old. I thing Stu Hamm is beyond insane of a player, but it gets old quick! My whole point was that bass is bass and I feel way too many guys make it out to be more than it is. I have 32 years of experience and after all this time I can so respect a bass player that plays bass. Duff kicks ass in an overall sense, playing what was far from popular at the time. Those songs were written from the heart not to be popular.

No matter how great the player, if the songs suck what difference does it make? Steve Harris is an awesome player but more importantly a great songwriter. Billy Sheehan is a god but Mr big??? Someone once asked, why is it that once a rock bassist gets good he suddenly becomes some jazz/fushion guy? Why can't he just be a good rocker?
