I just caught King's X last night at a really intimate venue. It's been a hot minute since I saw them live, and this was my first time seeing them since dUg has been running his "all signature" rig of Tech 21 heads and cabs, plus his signature Schecter Baron-H bass.

Sweet 8-pound 6-ounce baby Jesus in a tuxedo, what amazing tone! I was lucky enough to be about 10 feet in front of his cabs (four 4X10s) running a dry/wet mix from his 2-channel heads. The PA monitors were above my head, so I think I was probably getting about 90% of the sound straight from the source.

I was noticing that he keeps two heads in his rack. I've looked around a bit and I can't find any info on what his signal path is. Anybody know if he just runs two channels on one head and the other head is just a backup, or if he's actually running both heads for a total of 4 channels?

As a sidenote: As a non-gigging at-home noodler, a single 4X10 cab or a 1,000 watt head is insane for me to consider, but that Schecter bass is going to be my next bass.

I love seeing bigger bands in "intimate" venues. It's great that you could get a taste of what it sounds like to him on stage. I haven't seen any write-ups on Dug's current signal path, although I'm sure there are some out there. I would guess that that second head is a backup.

I have never seen King's X and only own one of their albums (Faith, Hope, Love). But I'm a fan of what they're all about.

I can't help with his current signal chain, but i just wanted to say that when i saw them in 2008, it was the best rock show i've ever attended. Glad to hear they're still doing the occasional gig.

How was dug's voice? He's said in interviews that the last few years he's been having some issues singing some of the stuff.

I hadn't heard anything about that at all until you just mentioned it, and had you not mentioned it, I never would have guessed it. He sounded great, vocally. Full 90+ minute set. Mostly the well-known songs and King's X staples you'd expect. Opened with Groove Machine, finished with Goldilox (as you'd expect), and hit Dogman, Go Tell Somebody, Over My Head, etc along the way. Now that you mention it, there was a absence of a lot of stuff where he and Ty do vocal harmonies. A few spots here and there, but not a lot of it. And he didn't do a lot of the accent screams as I have seen him do in the past.

I will mention though, about his rig. He started off Groove Machine and the next song or two with a pick. Then the did a few songs where he was using nothing but slap and thumb picking, and finished out the remainder of the gig doing nothing by finger picking. As far as I could tell, he never adjusted anything anywhere, and his tone remained completely consistent through all of it. His current rig setup is in full beast mode, and his style and technique is *not* slacking in the least despite him pushing 70. I'd say it's the best I've ever sen him as a player, honestly.

The last time I saw Kings X they were rolling a full arena stage backline and enough P.A. for a 5,000 seat hall in a place that maybe maxed out at 750. I was stupid enough not to wear earplugs, had to leave after 5 songs and my ears still rang for 3 days after. I had been a huge fan up to that point and maybe it was the hired sound company's fault but I kinda soured on them at that point. And then after Dogman they started seeming confused about their identity and... well. They were/are a great band and I do think they should have been bigger than they were but over the years I've kind of lost interest. I'm glad they're still out there doing what they do though.

I think he does just run the 1 amp as it splits the signal prob to 2 of the 410s one for low one for distortion octave.

Maybe the other head and cabs are a complete back up

King's X is one of those bands who's cool musically but dUg's vocals are awful. I can't listen to anything by them. Same for his side project KXM with George Lynch, they are all cool songs, but his vocals make it unlistenable. Maybe he's better live?

Amazing Comment on Dugs voice. I personally believe he's one of the best vocalists in the history of Rock. As far as his playing, always tasty. His work with Grinder Blues will give you a taste of his "chops" and the man has them. But to me his greatest strength was always as a songwriter. Kings X has some great tunes, and I say this as someone who is not a big metal fan.
