Thank you! So many people claim they are in it for the money, as if they get a bonus. Again again: the legal system IS NOT designed to make money. Any lawyers wanna back that up? I know a few, and they all say the same thing. Traffic stops, whatever... they aren't paid to issue tickets.
Depends on the jurisdiction.
I know of nowhere where cops make more based on the number of tickets issued.
I do know of a city that hired two officers and specifically told them "your salaries are funded completely by tickets. If the number of tickets we as a department issue drops, funding for your job will cease"
I've also read about cases where Judges have been getting kickbacks from private alcohol/drug rehabilitation facilities for directing those in their courts to them.
I also know how much lobbying is done by the private prison industry towards increasing minimum punishments for crimes.
...and the aforementioned shortening of yellow light cycles on red light camera equipped intersections to increase the number of tickets issued.
So - while the legal system itself is not intended to be profitable, there are people in it that are operating in a for profit manner and without the best interests of society in mind.
