Not necessarily a dumb question, depending on how you look at it.
I say this because with tube powered amplifiers you do not want to power them on without a load (speaker cabinet) attached to the output as this will send the output tubes into interdimensional meltdown.
For in home low volume jamming I would recommend either 1) turning down (obvious, I know, but most people just default their thinking to all amps must be at max volume) OR 2) a trusty ol headphone amp.
Most HEADS are just the amplifier section with no speaker. No speaker, no sound.
COMBO amplifiers would have speakers in the same enclosure as the amplifier and you can find decent small practice combo amps for relatively cheap.
