dumb ampeg question

a dumb question for sure but can you play and hear your bass sound out of the bass head component(ampeg classic bass heador any bass head for that matter) without the speaker cabinet. ? wondering if it plays any sound for just in the house-not the booming sound.newbie

No.

Heads do not contain any speakers and therefore no sound.

To answer your question ...no you can't hear any sound out of a head, you'll need to hook-up a speaker cabinet. sounds like you might be going down the path of separates ( Head & Speaker cabinet ), remember, save your money and buy quality gear and trust your ears

You do need a cab. But make sure you get the right cab. With the proper ohms of your head. And able to handle the power of your head.

Absolutely. CL may be the way to go depending on your location (metro, rural, etc.). Figure out your budget and go from there.

Used is fine. Just try it out before you buy it. Buy the best you can afford. Its better to save up and buy something good that you won't have to upgrade soon.

Not necessarily a dumb question, depending on how you look at it.

I say this because with tube powered amplifiers you do not want to power them on without a load (speaker cabinet) attached to the output as this will send the output tubes into interdimensional meltdown.

For in home low volume jamming I would recommend either 1) turning down (obvious, I know, but most people just default their thinking to all amps must be at max volume) OR 2) a trusty ol headphone amp.

Most HEADS are just the amplifier section with no speaker. No speaker, no sound.

COMBO amplifiers would have speakers in the same enclosure as the amplifier and you can find decent small practice combo amps for relatively cheap.
