Dummy load. Can you use ceramic cement resistors.

Those are secondary resistors from a wound rotor motor. I think I might even have some!

Vishay/Milwaukee make a whole series like this in various wattage ratings. The ones I have are 300 watters and were surplussed by an audio gear maker that a TB'er worked for. A dozen cost me one new set of T-I Jazz Flats back when the T-I strings were a lot less expensive than they are these days.

anyhow, simple answer to op from my personal experience doing just that is.... yes. ISH.

Don't drive it too hard, don't sit on their wattage rating constantly, they will eventually overheat.

They do work, though, and I personally used them in some very complex loudspeaker crossover builds back roughly 30 years ago... and they are still going today perfectly. Use multiples, triple or quadruple the power you're looking to dissipate, and keep the area open and vented

oh, and measure the resistance before running them.
 
Well I decided to just go for it. Wired two 8 ohm 25 watts in parallel and a single four ohm in series with them for just over 8 ohms. Used a lab grade neoprene container and filled it with mineral oil. Fitted the lid with the speaker wires and two output test points for my scope. Worked like a charm.
Nor a looker but it works haha.

It isn’t bad to have some headroom on the dummy load spec. For a 100W amp, having a load wattage capacity of 130W, 150W or higher is good. A 100W amp can produce more than 100W. It is true that these wire wound resistors can tolerate more wattage than their spec but why push it.

Also, there are fairly low inductance regular wire wound resistors and there are non inductive ones. Go with the non-inductive ones if you can. You might as well do it right, they don’t cost that much more.
