Dunlop Strings=love

Ive always loved trying different strings out, i really like my DR high beams and my D'adario chromes, but i've tried out a few fender sets, ernie ball, blue steels etc and my dunlops (For my four-string) are incredible. I dont think id string my Spector with em (Not aggressive enough, i like some thicker strings on a 5er) but they reallyare incredible!
(Except that they suck so you shouldnt buy them!)

well no lie, i just went to GC and picked up a pack of 45/105's.. nickels.. 19.99! not bad!

I'll hit back after the weekend with the initial verdict... I need something that stays hot longer than the EB Slinks that I normally get... used to love DR sunbeams, but our GC stopped carrying them... (regardless, I'll say the Dunlops suck and sounded flat and lifeless)... haa

Not aggressive enough

I found them more aggressive (midrangy) than prosteels on my L2000. Very even (not scooped) frequency response.

One strange thing is that when I intonated them all my saddles are perfectly aligned :eyebrow: (well the E is a couple mm flatter). Intonated perfectly to the 12th fret both fretted and harmonic. Not bad just weird.

And they sell here for only 22 Canadian Peso's which is cheaper than D'addarios! Plus no goofy looking rainbow ball ends.

But they suck so don't buy them ;)

We gotta stop bumping this thread or Dunlop will find out and price em like DR's!

Wait......

D^MN!

I had been given a free pair of Dunlop Nickels last time I went to Bassplayer Live a few years back. I finally got around to putting them on my 5 string Carvin and I have to say that they had a really nice sound, I'll say it again...really nice. They felt easy on my fingers too. When it was time to replace them during a set-up, I only had DR High Beams handy which I usually use. The High Beams sounded nice and snappy, but there was definately some problems with string consistency, the B string sounded dull and the G string had volume issues.

And mind you, I have been using DR strings for the last 5 years, but lately, I have had some bad batches with the High Beams and the coated colored strings that my son uses on his basses. So my next set will once again be the Dunlop nickel steels...I can't wait!

Based on rave reviews here, I picked up a set of nickel wound mediums at GC yesterday. I love flats on my PBass but after running flats on my Jazz for a while, decided I needed to go with rounds for the occasional obligatory slap and pop. Had a set of Ernie Balls on for a couple of months. Not a bad strings but they weren't doing it for me. Put the Dunlops on today and ah, this is more like it! Guess I'm more of a nickel than stainless steel guy. So far the play and sound great and seem to be better balanced with the jazz. Granted it's only been a couple of hours but so far so good and at $20/set a real deal. Thanks for the tip!

I wonder which string company makes these for Dunlop. I doubt Dunlop manufactures these themselves. Maybe D'Addario or EB makes them.

Dunlop does indeed manufacture them, they even make strings for other companies. In fact, if you watch the Kerry King video linked above, the other guy in the video is Les O'Connor who heads up the string division. He used to be the head guy at DR.
