Dunlop Super Bright Nickel vs SS

Anyone compare these two on the same bass? The SB SS are a bit too forward in the upper mids for one of my basses. I'm wondering if the nickels will be significantly warmer. I have tried both before but it's been a while since I used the nickels, and never compared them on the same bass. I remember them being pretty bright and mid forward.

I don't think you'll notice a huge difference in the mids, other than the SS being more scooped, and also brighter overall. If the Steels have too much mids, you probably won't like the nickels.

I normally put Super Bright nickels on everything, but last year I bought a Spector from a fellow TB'er which is a mid-monster. I fell in love with it immediately, and figured I'd love it more once I got my Super Bright Nickels on it..nope. Waaay to middy. I contacted the seller to see if he happened to know what strings were on it when he had it. His reply.....Super Bright Steels.

It's partly the forwardness of the mids but it's also the brightness of the steels that felt a little cold with my bass. If the nickel's mids are warmer through the mids they might work.

What are you using on the Spector now?

Yeah I didn't finish that, did I? The whole point of it was that I loved the bass when I got it, then put the Super Bright Nickels on it and didn't love it so much, then when I found out he had Super Bright Steels on it, I put the Steels back on and those are the only strings I'll use on it because they are scooped just right.

And yes the nickels are not as bright on top, and just thicker/crunchier through the mids.

I can't play with nickle strings, they hurt my fingers. But the SS sound (so far) pretty good!

I like Fat Beams and Hi Beam also. But there is something about the Sun Beams that you may like. If you are on the Nichol band wagon. Or at least want to see if the Nichols are what you are looking for.
