Dunlop Super Bright Nickels Should Be Called....

Very similar. Tension is very close, but the Super Brights have a bit more snap to the feel while Sunbeams are softer.
So we got the Nickels here, then there are the Steels, and the Marcus Miller Steels. What's a bassist to do?
Nickels = warm and crunchy.
Steels = brighter and thinner.
Marcus = more scooped, more tension.
This thread has me interested enough to try a set.. and the cost makes for such a nice low barrier of entry.
I change my strings "often", which is putting it mildly.
(Even though these strings usually retain their snap for awhile.)
Ran high dollar strings for years and years.
MMBongo had a thread going about Dunlop S.B. Nickels and how great and inexpensive they we're.
So I bought a couple of sets a year or so back and LOVED them!
Just ordered 7 more sets from Musicians Friend, $14 plus change a set, shipping included!!!!

Agreed. Jason/BSO is the place to go. The stock is always fresh and he knows his products.
Okay, drank the kool-aid and got a set for my 4003. They are nice strings! But they reminded me of just regular high quality strings, like when I tried Circle-K strings. Guess I'm fussy, so I was not easily sold on them. In the same order, I had a set of DR Lo-Rider Steels. Put those on my Ric, and I'm a happy camper again. For now. Last month it was Bass Boomers.
Thread bump-bought a set of Dunlop Nickels and slapped em on my PBass yesterday afternoon (This place is horrible for G.A.S.) So far the hype is real. Going from DR Pure Blues a neat difference in zing and kind of a high mid burp.

I have come back around to using the SB nickels after a year on Sadowsky blue nickels. Sadowsky brand is a fine string, without a doubt, (and a very long-lasting set IME) but I find it easier to get a little more variety in tone color out of the SB nickels. This may not be true with everyone's technique, fingers, etc.
As far as bringing the crunch... I agree for the most part. When I want them to crunch, they deliver, but if I back off of the attack, they aren't inherently crunchy sounding to me. They remain my favorite, with Sunbeams and Sadowsky Blues as very close contenders

had a set on a few days now. on a fender jazz, they are very bright, possibly to bright, but they should settle over a few days. they sound great. not sure yet whether they are better that roto66 nickle but will have a better idea once they bed in. But like them so far. hopefully have the warn in warm growl over next week or so.
I had them on my P bass and initially liked them very much. However I have upper-mid forward pickups, and with the SB's also being upper mid forward, it was a bit much. Ill put them on my Jazz at some point to see if they are a better fit.
How they sounding now? I took the set that I had on my P bass and put them on my Jazz. It will be some time before I can test them out in a live band situation, but so far they seem to fit with the Jazz better.
there still really bright (no bad thing) been on a week and still super zingy, think they will stay that way for a while, great with some dirt and and more funky sounds. do prefer the worn in roto nickles. nice and warm but still plenty of growl. hopefully another week or so these will go the same way. or not.
Thanks. My P bass already has upper-mid forward pickups, it was a bit much "gank" with these strings, boomers or flats balance out nicely with that bass. My Jazz on the other hand is a bit darker and slightly scooped, im hoping the SB's wakes up the mids a bit.
yeah they definitely will do that, they do work well on a jazz, very good strings, i actually have turned the mids down a bit on active setting and on eq.
Still lovin the SB's on my Jazz. I had a gig last night and I was super pleased with the tone, full and warm sounding yet with a crunchy snap. There is another big thread about someone giving up on Jazz Basses because they get lost in the mix, yada, yada....They need to try SB's on a Jazz, I was clear as a bell in the mix, heard every note across the fretboard crystal clear, yet had a very full and warm tone...IME thats been hard to achieve until now.
