Dunwich Amplification General Discussion

Belatedly throwing in my love for the ODB. One of my go-to dirt pedals, and unlike some in my collection I'll use it for any genre. :bassist:

I’m watching a film today where the dead are rising and eating the living.
Takes place in the town of Dunwich.
I don’t know if I want to sleep in the same house as my Volt Thrower tonight.

Judging by your avatar, you'd scare the evil away. :eek:
 
Gravity Well arrived :D

It’s not as over the top as I expected. The enclosure is absolutely gorgeous, and bit smaller than I’ve come to expect from Dunwich. I’d post a pic, but I’m having a hard time doing the sparkle finish justice. The sound is more subtle/reasonable than I expected, even with the controls all the way up. It’s very nice at adding space and depth, but it doesn’t seem to do huge waves of echo madness, which is something I’ve gotten used to from the Crazy Tube Circuits reverb on my Nyx synth. The Terror momentary switch will certainly do terrifying things. Watch your levels when holding that button down, as things start getting very loud. It might not be the same on bass as other instruments, but it gets to a point where I could imagine cone and hearing damage could happen at cranked amp settings.

I have only played for a few minutes with my StingRay and J/MM Spector fretless. I really should spend a bit more time with it before trying to describe much about it. However, I couldn’t contain my excitement, and had to post up :)

If you dial back the internal trimmer you can get the Terror switch to act as a nice sustain to the reverb instead of instant chaos. Ends of being a lot more musical if that is what you might want.

Yea its definitely not an insane reverb. I would say on guitar it could be an always on reverb that works well at all times for a general tone that uses reverb. Part of that subtle-ness is that it uses only discrete transistors rather than op amps for the signal path. Most of the default verbs using the Belton stuff use op amps since they are a lot more ideal for sending and mixing signals but I wanted to go the older style approach of using transistors for buffering and mixing. The result tends to create a lot more subtle of a sound but I think its a lot nicer when you start to push it really hard with high gain fuzz or dist.
 
If anyone is keen on a more extreme idea, I am developing this reverb

this model starts with the same basic Reverb generating chip as the Gravity Well but then has a few extras like an octave down circuit (from the Meatbox) on the wet signal that you can blend from 0% to 100%, a secondary delay chip on the wet signal being fedback to the input of the circuit with its own delay time controllable, and its entirely op amp based so its going to be more like a higher end digital reverb type sound compared to the more old school approach of the GWell. It still has a voltage inverter inside to double the headroom for high gain users.

How well will the octave down work with guitar? That sounds spicy
 
Gravity Well and ODB being fed by my Dreadbox Erebus (controlled by a Novation Circuit).
Cellphone mic doesn’t capture all the bass, but you get the general idea. The GW really adds a nice dimension to the sound. I tried dialing the internal trim on the terror all the way down, and now it’s a little too subtle. Time to pop the hood again.


The synth does have an echo delay built in, which is also active (as you can hear).
 
I have a question for Dr Nick over at @dunwichamps:
It seems like tube guitar and bass amplifiers have very simple tone\eq layouts. Treble, Mids, Bass; volume and gain. Done. No graphic or parametric EQ. Is this because of market forces, where people that want tube amps don't like all the modern flim-flamery, or is a technological issue where the design of instrument tube amps simply don't lend themselves towards complex EQs?

Primary reason is because it costs a lot less to make a simple EQ and then the other thing is that generally amplifier design is a lot of copy-catting. Since some of the first amplifiers used simple EQs and they were very popular so there was no reason to modify the design.

So it wouldn't be impossible to have a parametric EQ like the Orange 4 Stroke on a tube amp, just impractical?

The Ampeg SVT 2, 3 and 4 PRO tube heads all have graphic EQs.

Its certainly easier to insert a solid state graphic or parametric EQ (see Mesa and some Ampegs for example) but to build one out of tubes is more complicated. The amount of parts, the real estate, ect are prohibitive to creating it.
