Dunwich Amplification General Discussion

I wonder if that’s similarly w guitar?

I might need to bust the guitar out and try.

I’d love to do a comparison of the Super Fuzz clones. I’ve got the BSRI FZZ, and a bud has the Behringer clone. There’s the Sabbathi from Does It Doom that sounds pretty good on the demo, but only has a volume and an internal gain trim. There’s the classic Boss pedal too.

SS/BS has the Buzzz which I’ve not seen any chatter about. It has a foot switch which can be used to toggle the octave or a boost on/off, which might make it comparable to the Witchfinder for those wanting that feature.

Anyone else have suggestions for pedals to consider on bass? I’ve googled it but I’m curious what our resident experts think :)

I’ve tried both on guitar with the same results. The octave is more pronounced but is still relatively subtle unless the High is cranked.

As for other octave fuzz, EQD’s Life Pedal (v1 I haven’t tried the smaller v2 but that expression input is intriguing) is a nice RAT option but I prefer the Witchfinder’s fuzz over it. There’s also the Broughton Sunder Fuzz which is amazing and on-par with the Witchfinder (SF being much smoother/mellower through its ranges) although I experienced a bit of glitch/gate issues with the Sunder on my passives.

A Super Hyper Fuzz comparison by you would be awesome. I don't have any recording equipment on my end. I do have the Does It Doom Sabbathi. It sounds exactly like Dopethrone no joke it's perfect if that's the sound you're going after. Would say the stock setting sounds more like Jus' tone more than Tim's bass but don't get me wrong, the Sabbathi sounds excellent on bass. You can open the pedal and adjust the gain. You can get FZ-2 tones with their Doomsaw pedal. I have Minotaur's Saturnine another FZ-2 clone and this one comes with all three modes but the boost is a lot whole cleaner and louder than the original Hyper Fuzz I have. It's hard to describe without thinking of the old Monty Python Tinny Woody bit. Where the Boss pedal is tinny (I like mode 1 and 3 for bass the best), the Saturnine is a very sensitive pedal because it'll open up with your amp's eq. So right now, I only have a Fender Rumble with the bass knob on both my amp and on the pedal crank without getting too subby. I like blending both the Sabbathi going through one amp set fairly neutral and my Saturnine into my low end heavy bass amp. Minotaur Sonic Terrors also has another take on the Super Fuzz called Mud Giant. I don't own that one.

I've read that Fuzzlord's FU-2, Idiotbox's Dungeon Master and their first gen big box of the Ron Swanson are all good pedals for bassists. Pepers' Pedals Humongous Fuzz is another interesting take on the circuit. It has a setting that mimics the SF300's 1.5 setting where you get a blended of mode 1 and 2. The Humongous also has an HM-2 style eq sweep you can add.

@Warlock_Surfer - I forgot about the Fuzzlord FU-2. Thanks for the reminder. They have a bass demo on YouTube and their page. I’m not sure that it’s enough to make me change from the BSRI FZZ and the Witchfinder that I have. Of course that got me thinking about the Fuzzlord HM-6 which got me back into chainsaw territory and renewed my interest in the KMA Guardian of the Wurm.

so much dirt, so little time :)

@Warlock_Surfer lol I missed your post where you mentioned all the Minotaur stuff. I might try their Mud Giant or inquire about a reasonably sized Saturnine. Right now I'm running the Swamp Lord in parallel with the Witchfinder but I'm curious other parallel options.

I love the big box pedals Minotaur

If you have BSRI FZZ and the Witchfinder then you're set. They seem like the more flexible fuzz pedals to own. Blackhawk Mithrandir has the option of turning off the octave. I know somebody in the Stoner Doom thread did a review of it. You can search the forums for it.

So true about there being so much dirt. It's a good problem. So much overlap between products sometimes that I believe the Hyper Fuzz was inspired by both the Super Fuzz and the Bee Baa fuzz with its boost. Then I guess you take into account the Fuzzlord Drone Master has a setting similar to the boost side of the Hyper Fuzz.

Swamp Lord in parallel with the Witchfinder is what I imagine the Behemoth and Leviathan would sound like... just heavy as ****. Judging from Andy Bassist posted, he should be doing a review of the Mud Giant real soon on his YouTube channel. Hearing the YouTube videos I think you can get the Saturnine to sound like the Mud Giant. Personally, I like the whole big box gimmick as long as they got top mounted jacks. Now I'm thinking a big box Fuzzlord Troglodyte next to my Saturnine would look cool as hell.

I need to spend more time with my Witchfinder but I’ve been enjoying the Fjord Fuzz Fenris, which also has a more subtle octave. I could get them to sound similar but also very different.

It can do high gain just as well as low gain. The controls are not exactly intuitive but there is a ton of great sounding variety on tap once you figure out how they interact.

Not really a Hyper/Superfuzz but the DA/BSRI Spite Box is another octave fuzz I really enjoy. It sounds huge and retains a ton of low end. Where the other two could be option overload at times, it excels at one thing. Decide your depth and ad upper octave to taste. Simple.

I like both the Witchfinder and Wizard through headphones, but I did a shootout through my big rig at jam the other night, and it was immediately clear that the Witchfinder works better in a mix. I feel like it's much easier to dial in midrange along with bass on the Witchfinder, since it has the 3-band EQ with mid toggle rather than just Hi and Lo.

I could certainly see that. Is the Wizard a Bax EQ? if so, then users should be able to make a mid bump by cutting low & hi and boosting the output to compensate. That said, the Witchfinder mid EQ and blend seems like it would be easier to adjust for a variety of contexts.

The Wizard has a baxandall stack (from early posts by Dunwich/Nick at ilovefuzz about the circuit).

Anyone else use their Wizard as a medium gain fuzz/distortion - Gain about at noon? I've been coming back to this setting a lot lately and it is my go-to medium drive tone.

I find that I can't really get a mid-forward tone on the Wizard without cutting a lot of its low end thunder. I wish there were more positions on the Depth knob.
