DX7 church organ

My local church has a pipe organ, but it apparently doesn't often get used. For today's Christmas mass, the organist played a Yamaha keyboard that sounded exactly like one of the organ patches on a DX7. It sort of reminds me of some 80's songs I've been listening to lately, with DX7 factory sounds that didn't really fit the song.

Could very well be - it's about 120 years old.
I've not been to a more modern church, but the acoustics should be designed around modern digital organs. The problem is that, this church reverb is designed around the pipe organ, and the PIPES patch will likely sound better than the E. ORGAN patch to my understanding.

I'm not against the DX7 😛 I just prefer a different patch on it from the organist, or some of the producers back in the 80s.
It was a very formal service; they accept visitors like me to celebrate Christmas, but recording wasn't allowed. The music was sung in Chinese, and the singing along with the room acoustics made for a very solemn experience. I just wish that the organ could have sounded even better.

In NE churches are built of wood and plaster around the pipe organ, and the university music schools and conservatories pump out musicians who know the traditional repertoire. There is a stone church in town but it's Episcopal (not that it matters) from the late 19th century (new) and has about the 6th best pipe organ. The newest church in town, 60's ultra modern, has an amazing pipe organ. It started out Unitarian and is now Korean Babtist. It was too ostentatious for the Unitarians. There is one church in town with a sound stage in what is supposed to be The Sanctuary, and a drum kit (and I assume an el bassist), but I shun it as being anathema.

I wonder if learning to tune and maintain a pipe organ would make a fun hobby. Would feel good to save one of those beautiful old instruments.

Last year, Thanksgiving 2024, I finally got to hear the giant Wannamaker organ in Center City, Philadelphia, and it was awesome. Sadly, Macy's closed the store a few months later and I wonder what's going to happen to the organ. It's one of the biggest in the world and it's built into the building.

If it is really a vintage DX7, sell that *They can fecth 1K on Reverb )and get a modern keyboard from Yamaha/Roland or Korg - also used. The problem with the DX7 is that it is FM synthesis and usually organ sound sounds yucky on those. It's the synth architecture, it just won't work

A Roland stage organ like a VR-09 will have great pipe organ patches
