So Julie, when are we gonna hear something from the Slick Power Duo? Is Eric ever gonna take a night off so you can work on that?

Haha - good question! I always call him up to jam, but he's always playing with some one else. That bum...

But seriously, Eric and I are going to be working on something this fall... we already played a improvisational show with guitar wizard Robbie "Seahag" Mangano (of Sound of Urchin, Project Object, Wrong) at John and Peter's in New Hope. It was so much fun, we're planning on doing it again in late September. Expect a release by October...

Thanks for all the compliments, everybody! I like to chop. Peppers, onions... oh nevermind.

Well, okay.... if you think it's strictly necessary to have a guitar player too.

Seriously, sounds great, and thanks for the heads-up!

e. wow.

My copy arrived in the mail Friday, but I resisted the temptation to pop it directly into the CD player and decided to wait until I could give it a listen with full attention. The first good (if not ideal) opportunity was a road trip to a party on Saturday night which included about an hour of open freeway driving, on a route I've driven dozens of times and could do in my sleep (or so I thought). I got on the freeway, settled into the drive for a few minutes, and cranked it up.

I'll post a more substantive review later if there's interest, but for now I'll just tell you what effect it had on me. When the final notes of the disc sounded, I realized that I had sailed past my exit several miles earlier. Didn't even know where I was.

I listened to it again on the way back, at 2:00 in the morning, and it not only got me safely home eyes-wide-open, but left me wide lying in bed, wide awake, for another hour despite my utter exhaustion from the long night. My brain simply would not let it go, and played everything it could remember over and over until I eventually drifted off.

Now I can't get it out of the CD player; I just want to listen to it again and again. This is something I NEVER do. No matter how much I like something, I always put it aside after one or at most two passes through. I can easily imagine listening to "e" 100 times, though, and hearing new and interesting things each time through.

I'll report back to let you know if that's true. At this rate, it shouldn't take more than a few days....

Oh my god Julie, the e cd is absolutely incredible!

Phenomenal playing there miss, that must have been so damn fun!

I've been waiting to hear the likes of what's on this cd for what seems like forever.

Can't wait till y'all hit the Great Northwest! :hyper:

Wow, thanks guys! This may sound cheesy/lame, but I feel the same way - every time I hear new things, concentrate on different parts, listen to harmonies, etc. I'm so amazed that we did the whole thing, basically live, in 6 days. It was February and chilly (even for Nashville) and we were learning parts like "fastness" (aka track 6) a little bit every day and recording them immediately after we could play it through from start to finish. As one can imagine, the whole thing was a blur - but we knew its potential listening back to the basic tracks. Gary Platt has done a phenomenal job mixing, and definitely has taken it to the next level. We're just pleased as punch! I'm so glad you guys like it to - or else I'd fear that we're too weird for this world, haha!

Julie -- Do you think you guys will be including more stuff from "e" in your upcoming shows than on previous tours? I dig the other Belew and KC material, but I'd love to hear/see as much of "e" as possible in Annapolis! (Please?)

Well we've been doing a, b and e (tracks 1-6 and 10-11). We have played d live in the past (in fact, I think we did it in Annapolis last time around). c may be a bit far off, as we only have one day of rehearsal/pack up, but perhaps we can practice both during soundchecks...

Sounds great -- thanks!

Now that you brought it up, would you mind explaining how the 5 titles (pieces? movements?) came to be 11 tracks on the disc? I haven't paid much attention to track numbers while listening to it, but I was sure surprised the first time I got near the end and discovered I was on track 11! (I expected 5 tracks, of course, but it easily could've been one long track as far as I could tell.)

It is five pieces, but Adrian wanted the listener to be able to skip ahead to different sections. This may actually change on future pressings...

Interesting. Thanks!

So I listened to it front-to-back (yet) again last night and came away with the following insight:

e = a + b + c + d

Right? Am I right? Do I win a prize or something? :hyper:

Also, I now understand why playing "c" live would be impossible without extensive rehearsal. Actually, the entire album seems that way, but I see why "c" is especially so.

yes - many loops and overlapping sections make that one tough. if we had in-ears it would probably be simpler... though the bose projects mightily.

Lobster - dunno about the prize... I haven't even dissected that equation... perhaps get an ice cream cone from the Annapolis Ice Cream Company?

Thanks for the bump, Greg!

The ice cream sounds good, but I think instead I'll treat myself to a copy of the (evidently forthcoming) New Hope disc! According to a certain Robin Slick (maybe you've heard of her?), you've recently been putting finishing touches on it and it will be available for purchase at the upcoming shows. True? Can't wait to hear it!

I tis am... and I'm thinkin about throwing some other tracks on there as well... they're live-in-the-studio jams we did a couple years back with another guitarist friend, Brian Davis.

But that's only because a certain doggie bit the John and Peter's disc when it arrived in the mail, so two of the tracks won't play... But I can't be mad at him, he just likes to inspect our mail for our own protection.
