Hi everybody, I'm a double bass player (mostly jazz & contemporary impro) in Rome. I'm currently using a EA iAMP Doubler with an AI Ten2 EX. I'm pretty happy with the amp, but I'd like to try a different cabinet. The Ten2 has a good fidelity of sound but it's not "punchy" enough, especially in outdoor gigs. Plus, I've found that the AI sometimes can be very boomy, even if you turn down the downfiring woofer (there's a switch on the back of the cabinet that can reduce it down to 50%). I'm looking for something "sharper" for louder scenarios and some fellow bassists are suggesting me to try the DB 112. Somebody has already tried this pairing, EA iAMP Doubler with Aguilar DB 112? What about the impedance? The EA works @ 4 ohms (550 watts) or @ 8 ohms (350 watts). I see that the DB 112 works @ 8 ohms (300 watts). Will it work with my amp? Any other suggested solutions?
I've tried the Aguilar DB 112 and SL112 with upright bass with my Acoustic Image amp and didn't like either enough to make the purchase. The voicing of the cabs left a lot to be desired, for my tonal preferences. The EA head will work fine with the DB112, but at 8ohm, you won't be getting it's full power. You'd want a 4 ohm stand alone cab for that. For $50 more, you could get a MAS18, and that will smoke the Aggie DB112, imo.
Thanks, Pat. Have you (or someone else) ever tried one of these? Ampeg: Portaflex Series - PF-112HLF NEO 112 Specs NEO 115 Specs NL-112 - Euphonic Audio Wizzy-112 - Euphonic Audio Wizzy-112 M-Line - Euphonic Audio
I also encourage you to check out Mike Arnopols line of cabs. Welcome to Michael Arnopol Soundworks Many sizes and configurations. I use the 45 with my Doubler. Guys are loving the 18. Best cabs out there for DB, IMO.
I own a Ten2Ex cabinet and understand what you mean about its sound. I would take a hard look/give a listen to the Barefaced Bass Super Midget. It has become my go-to cabinet for my upright bass gigs where I feel I may need some volume as it is very efficient and relatively uncoloured. It has the added advantage of sounding great with bass guitar as well should you be doing any doubling. There are a fair number of people using this cabinet and a lot of postings on TB that discuss it. The cabs are manufactured in Brighton, England and are easily purchased from another EU country. Thanks for all the tips, guys! I tried some cabinets yesterday and I must say that I really dig the Aguilar SL-112. More focused and clear that my Ten2. And it's really light! I'll try to check some of the other cabinets you suggested, though I'm not so sure I could find the Mike Arnopol's products here in Roma. Too bad, I was really curious!
I LOVE the EA 12 Mline Wizzy. It’s my favourite cab for upright bass by a long way. That said the other cabs mentioned in this thread are all great options too.
