Ear protection for bassists?

Hi,

I've already found the big sticky topic about ear protection, and am currently working through it.

My problem though: I've got custom molded earplugs with -15dB linear dampening filters in it.
However, I notice if I put these in, I can't hear my bass! The low end seems to be gone completely!
Pretty damn annoying!

(Also not super satisfied with the plugs. If I move my cheekbone - which I do often while playing since I make rediculous bass-faces - sometime I hear loud plops and the sound gets louder. Sounds like somebody is opening and closing a high-pass filter. Annoying!)

So I kind of put them in half and half when it gets loud, finding a compromise between dampening and hearing what I am doing...

However this doesn't seem to suffice. Last week we played in a boat (ie. big metal tube), all monitors were pretty loud, and now I've got a peep+hiss in my ears GRR...
So urgently looking for a better solution.

What are your guys experience with these custom molded earplugs? Do you guys still hear your basstones ok in the mix?

It would probably help if I use my amp only as monitor (I already do) and boost the mids and highs to cut through the mix and my earplugs. (Too bad I don't have pre-EQ lineout, I would have to buy a DI-box)
Not too fond of this option though, I don't want a clangy bass sound, even only on stage ... :s

I was also wondering: how do the guys who use in-ear monitors work? I play in a cover band, and most of the time we have a kind-of-decent PA. But still I think getting a decent monitor mix is a dream. So how do you guys work? Only bass in the in-ears and just hear the mix through the earplus? Or do you guys always use a monitor mix?

Not custom but the ones from Etymotic work here with the band and at concerts when the FOH guy pushes too hard.

Mix?
We've been using BOSE L-1's for 9+ years so we create our mix onstage for smaller places and our stage volume is usually OK. For FOH shows, I use a Behringer 12" kickback(Hartke clone) pointed at me with lows cut out of it. FOH subs and drummer's monitor give me lows enough. This works ONLY if the FOH operator knows what they are doing.
