Ear training...

The best thing I found that got my ear happening a lot better was learning a bunch of songs with real melodic and musical content (i.e. not Metallica/Korn/Rage Against The Machine).

Jazz standards are good for developing you ear IMO even if you don't want to play Jazz because, and I know I'm generalising a bit, they give you a real melody hung on a set of intelligent and logical chord changes. Not just some monotonal bellowing over a bunch of power chords.
 
I do not mean this in a dismissive manner, but this topic has been quite thoroughly discussed for as long as I've been at TB, (snce something like 2000 I guess). I would do a search, (particularly some of those sticky threads at the top of GI with all sorts of cool threads), and you'll find some really great discussions on this. Truthfully, you should find most everything you need to know in some of those classic threads.
