EarCandy Cabs - Beware: Crazy Ahead

warning - totally OT

hey brother BurningSkies, very interesting and cool Avatar change ! crazy redheaded Lincoln.

Thanks Man! Its a detail from a Mark Ryden painting. If you don't know his work, its very very cool...lots of Lincoln fetishism along with some other interesting themes.

He responded to my email I sent on 2/6.

John, you have made a pain in the ass out of your self, please do not email me again. Its my business, I run it the way I see fit and am not building cabs for talentless hacks who lack creative ability and dont need your input. You got your cabs, I promo'd your ****** band and never did you wrong, so leave me the **** alone and have a nice life.
Thank you
Tim

I got 2 1x12 open back earcandy guitar cabs a little over 5 years ago on ebay. Instead of the promised 2 weeks, it took 6. When I went out of town, I told them don't deliver between these dates as I won't be in town. When I got home, they were on my doorstep, waiting to be stolen. Communication sucked, customer service sucked. Packaging and cabs were good, but the tolex is peeling badly. Insufficient glue, I suppose. Wouldn't deal with them again, but I guess I got lucky in that I only had to wait an extra month to get them.

Whew... thank goodness Nick Epifani is still making cabs for talentless hacks who lack creative ability. I won't have to go without.

When I was a guitar hack, I wanted an EarCandy badly.. luckily I was bored and surfing the net and found all the hate for them. It was the delayed build time that killed my interest. I'm an impatient guy. I went with Vader cabs instead and loved it. Matched it with one of the early Bugera 333xl heads and it was earvana for my 6,7, and 8 string. I'm still a proud member of 7string.org, but alas, I am not a good guitar player and moved back to my comfort zone of bass. I will live long and prosper with my Mikey Way, Badtz-Maru Bronco, and my Mikro.

FWIW, I had a series of discussions with Tim several years ago, about the possibility of ordering a pair of BassBomb 2x12 cabs. Things never progressed to the point of me actually placing an order at that time, or even getting close. Thankfully.

He didn't strike me as being particularly crazy, but probably at least a little eccentric (So what else is new? It's the music biz!). :smug:

While Tim was very enthusiastic about the alleged tone & performance of his cabs, he was pretty short on detail about exactly how he achieved all his impressive results - except for the whole "tonewoods" thing. Tonewoods, tonewoods, tonewoods!

This ultimately raised a red flag for me. I'm no acoustical engineer, but I'd always been led to believe that a good bass cab is one with a resonant frequency peak that's higher than the power range of the bass itself - and that the ideal bass cab is one that doesn't resonate at all. Now this guy is telling me that his bass cabs are superior - because of how much they resonate! It just didn't add up. :hmm:

The one other thing that put me off was Tim's very stubborn, doctrinaire refusal to accommodate me on a couple of small, relatively minor features. I explained to him that, while a beautiful natural wood bass cab might make for a great piece of furniture, I was far more interested in a product that would be very durable & roadworthy. I asked if he would build a couple of cabs for me with a basic black Line-X exterior coating, standard metal grills & heavy-duty plastic/rubber corner protectors.

The entire tone of the dialogue abruptly changed. Tim immediately became very defensive, almost adamant: He would not under any circumstances consider covering up his beautiful handmade work with some kind of ugly black industrial black coating. And he absolutely refused to install locking corners. His cabs would always have feet - and nothing but feet. No exceptions, no negotiations. :eyebrow:

I can understand pride in one's work, but this seemed like a very strange attitude for a businessman to take. Clearly he took my request very personally - and very negatively. It was almost as if I'd just asked him to sacrifice his puppy to The Fire God!

Well after that exchange, my "spidey sense" was tingling - big time. I decided to allow my little correspondence with Mr. Paulsen to cool off, while I considered other options. Ultimately I decided to go in a different direction. In retrospect, I'm so glad I did!

This is interesting:

Especially the last paragraph:
"If I ordered a cab and was told 6 weeks and it took 2 years. I would be livid with anger, so, I apologize from the bottom of my heart for the unfortunate events that I have undergone that affected my clients. All will be rectified and I apologize, please forgive me and watch Earcandy rise from the ashes, it is me, my passion and my mission."

Anybody who never got their cab delivered heard from him?...
Just curious.

Well, I can say that I have a 212 bass bomb that sounds incredible. I got it at the end last time just before he stopped in 2010. It projects well and carries all the frquencies. Would I do it again? Probably not. I really didn't think it was coming as it was about six weeks late and emailed/called him all the time for status. It is also very pretty and seems well made, and yes it is heavy.

Haven't heard this name in a while. Several years ago I ordered a bass bomb and it took just over a year to get the cab on a four to six week quote. Tim was fine to deal with especially in the beginning. However, after months and months went by with out a cab no amount of 'nice' mattered. At no point in time would I say he was out of line or unresponsive. I either ordered during a very unfortunate year in his life or I was subjected to an extensive list of exaggerations and/or lies). Either way I no longer wanted or needed the cab when it showed up. I did try and get my money back towards the end, but then he ended up making good on the cab.

I was so fed up with the experience I didn't really even play the cab when it showed up. I unpacked it, plugged it in for a few minutes to make sure it made sound, took some pictures and packed it back up. The cab looked beautiful but I didn't care to find out if I liked it or not. If I recall correctly, I sold it to D.A.R.K in the classifieds within days of it arriving.

I have actually ordered twice from Tim and had nothing but a positive experience each time. He went over the details of each pair of cabs in several emails and called me a few times to double check some of my preferences. In the end I really just stepped back and let him do his thing. I have been nothing but satisfied and they are some of the best cabinets I have ever owned. I ordered two 2x12 bass bombs, and I recently placed an order for two sweet tooth 2x10's and got the same experience I did with the first pair. It did take quite a while to get both pairs, but he was with me every step of the way and delivered in the end. Not to mention he built me two racks to match the cab sets. I get questions about my gear everywhere I go and I never have anything negative to say about it.

You can really drive these suckers too it was worth the wait in my opinion. I didn't really get into anything personal with Tim. I kept it all strictly business, and he did the same for me.

By these comments it sounds like you are recommending Tim and his cabs.

Are you?
