Anyone know what kind of gear he uses or ideally what he used to record the 1st albums,his playing then was really raw in some place but still dead dubby tight.

All I know is he's been using a stienberger live for years. His bass lines and playing is second to none. He is UB40 
He was def rock steadying on a P-Bass (see attached pic) back in '82 on this Rockpalast performance of "Sardonicus" before touring with the Steinberger L-Series
