Earliest Known P/J?

I had a luthier friend in NY many years ago. It was his recollection that throughout the 60s and 70s, guys came to him with P basses and requested a J be added. He was clear that he did this to many P basses, with a toggle which switched BETWEEN pickups as he refused to be blamed for a bad blend circuit.
