Early '70s Soul

Two more words: Kool And The Gang rules. Well, at least they did before they started doing stuff like "Celebrate" and "Ladies Night."

Early Kool & the Gang was one of a handful of artists who defined early Funk. Kool, Funky George Brown and Claydes Smith are still one of my all time favorite rhythm sections. It's funny to see Smith listed as a lead guitarist, his power was with the stroke. None better. Check out "Funky Stuff". One of the most iconic drum patterns around, killer rhythm guitar and Kool just doing what he does. The horns weren't too shabby either.

Agreed also on before Celebration and Ladies Night and Joanna.
:D

Wow, haven't thought of or listen to any of this in a long time. This is one of my favorite bass lines. Tasty as it gets, not one note to many. I like the subtle variations of the turn-around riff in the last part.
I would say that if you can play this, you are a master bass player.
Great song, though I prefer the Thelma Houston version because the bass is just sooo funky.

My first ever favorite band was L.T.D., and Henry Davis, their bassist, plays on this track. Just love his style.
