Early birthday surprise

In January of 2010, I gave $250 to a friend of mine to help get him home to NYC after his father passed. We haven't been in touch with each other much since, but I knew he was following my band on Facebook. I never have thought about this guy paying me back the $250.

Long story short, he shows up at my gig this Friday with a gig bag and tells me, "Happy Birthday. I'm sure we're even." Inside was this beauty.

Oops, pic didn't load.

I wish the guy I loaned money to would pay me back. I'd even take cash. Unfortunately, the amount I loaned him would buy a custom shop bass from almost anyone. I thought that knowing him for 25 years meant I'd get it back, but I was wrong.

A thoughtful gift too. He could have just paid you back but he chose to go one better. Friends like this are few and far between.

But then again, not everyone would have doled out that initial $250 in the first place. Very decent of you to say the least.

Congrads on your early birthday present. and sorry to hear about your friend's father's passing. I've recently ordered an Ibanez bass I once owned as an early birthday present for me. it was an Ibanez sr305 5-string bass. I once owned this bass, but I ended up selling it because at the time, I needed a new bass cab since my old bass cab crapped out on me. I did regret selling. it was one of the best basses I've ever played. and now that I've ordered one, I'll be having a very happy birthday. so congrads on your early birthday present. may it bring you years of joy. and in case you're wondering, I did have my old bass cab modified even though I have a new bass cab. so now I have 2 rigs. one for home(which I oftenly gig with) and one at my friend's rehearsal spot.

my rule is to never loan out more than you are willing to give.

had a friend once who was going thru a tough time. girlfriend was in the hospital etc.
my wife and felt compelled to give them 1000 dollars no strings attached.
4 weeks later they are getting married and my wife and i are asked to be in the wedding party. we said yes but naively assumed that because we gave them that money, that they would surely pick up the tab for the wedding.
it ended up costing us 800 dollars more to be in that wedding and left a bad taste in both of our mouths.

i don't remember what my point was.
anyways, that is a great thing.

Wow, not very reciprocal.

Congrats to the OP on the new bass!
