Earth B-1000 head on ebay

The whole "it doesnt have tubes, but my friend said it works" thing is sketchy.

And the fact that it looks like the back panel was ripped off in a violent frenzy......somebody must've really needed some tubes!!!!

Its really dirty too. I bet it'd clean up nice. But it looks like too much work.

I have a hard time believing that music store wouldn't of at least tried out a set of tubes before selling it, but I suppose its possible...

I bought a very similar Plush (guitar-version) head using the same power tubes as this one would for $100 in really nice shape 2 years ago. It sounds pretty good for guitar but runs out of steam before ever playing very loudly with bass. I'd imagine this model is a little better suited for bass than mine, but I still expect it to have trouble keeping up with the average loud-ish rock band.
keep in mind that most Plush and Earth amps dont have a whole lot of value on the vintage market but are reported to be an excellent candidate for performing modifications to for use with guitar.

After having restored a Plush 1060s (Identical to the Earth B1000 except 2 inputs), I have to say it's an excellent sounding amp. Sounds every bit as good as a Fender or Ampeg and construction is of equal quality. However, $50 for the amp and $40 for shipping brings you to $90.. Now, the tubes, caps, resistors and pots will add about $200 to the price. So now your up to $290 as a DIY project. That's a great value. However, if your not doing the work yourself, you can add at least $200 for labor. This would bring your project cost above $600.. Still a good value for a 100w tube amp, if your going to keep and play it. On the down side, don't expect to recoup your money selling it, because in the end it's still a an non collectable Earth amp. Fully restored, I doubt you will get more than $400 for it.

This is what the completed project looks like;

And please don't say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That amp is 40 years old, and all the electrolytic caps need replacing. Even though it may play when when you put tubes in it, any one of those caps could short at any moment and take out a transformer or tube. Even the old carbon comp resistors that were located next to heat sources are prone to cracking and shorting.

In closing, this can be an excellent amp for another 40 yrs if you do this job right. Otherwise, just walk away...

I have an old Earth head, but it is a Solid State head. It has held up very well over the years (I bought ii back in 1983 and it was very used even at that point). It never let me down until this year, but I have to take the blame for it, it collected to much dust becuase of a rehab progect in the house and now only emits crackles. In 83 I bought if for $250, it later took a back seat to Peavey setup and then SWR, (it became my back up head). In the early 90's my swr head spent more time in the shop than it did with me, so I brought the earth back my main head... and I ran it a 2 ohms all day long and other bass player loved they way it sounded, and would ask to use it during commen gigs. Besides my stupidity, I have nothing but good things to say about Earth bass heads

Basically, Earth's solid state amps were complete Peavey rip offs. However, both Plush and Earth's tube gear is very well designed.

This looks like a pretty good deal if you could get it for less than $200 shipped. You will still have to do all the work i previously specified but at least it's got new tubes. Also, Plush is Earths predecessor and their build quality is better from what I've seem. When the partners broke up and one continued under the Earth name, a lot of cost cutting was done. Still good amps, but the Plush is a little better.

Take note the comments made by the ebay seller are nonsense. Fender never sued Earth. Peavey sued Earth for out right stealing it's solid state amp designs. The Plush & Earth tube designs resemble Fender because after the CBS take over, some Fender people ended up at Plush.

The B-1000 is a great, great sounding bass amplifier. I picked one up about 2 years ago as payment for helping a friend move a grand piano- it's turned out to be the coolest and best sounding amp I've ever owned. I had to spend some money getting it back into shape it but it was worth every penny- in my top 3 "best I've ever heard" for classic/vintage/meatnpotatoes bass tones in the 100 watt amp class. It's definitely got an early 60's Fender Showman vibe, but with a bit more weight in the lows and silky highs. Into reggae and dub? Flip on the Super Bass, roll the tone control back on your P or J, and get in touch with your inner Family Man. I could type at least 3 paragraphs about how much I love this amp.

I've posted my Earth previously, but since I just bought a new digital camera I thought I'd take a few new snaps:
