Earth/Ground Lift

Not having three conductor power line at home could make the amp noisier but it is not unsafe for the amp to use it this way. The third conductor is there for your safety, it blows the fuse or turns off the circuit breaker in the event that something shorts and puts the line voltage onto the chassis.

If the line voltage is present on the chassis & it's on a carpeted, or otherwise insulated, cabinet, it is energized waiting for someone or something to touch it before it will cut the circuit breaker. That someone or something could be the OP.

Well I did say that it wouldn't hurt the amp but could hurt the person using the amp.

In the past when using gear with two conductor power cords, I used to hate it when my lip would get zapped when it touched a mic while I had my hands in the strings. Ever wonder how Elvis got that smile?

The first public gig I had in my life I was using a Fender Bassman head without a grounded power cord. I was the bass player and the lead singer, nervous as he**, went to belt out the first word of the song and POW. I got lit up like a pack of KOOLs.
