Earthing Issue?

Hey guys

I have a Fender Mex Jazz bass and i think i'm having issues with earthing. There's a buzz i can hear unless i'm touching the strings, or another metal component on the bass. I've checked the pickups and the souldering and it all seems to be connected fine.

Could this issue be something else? I've noticed that my Jack input is very temperamental even after replacing it several times. I will sometimes need to wiggle the cable to stop it making a noise/low signal.

First your jack. Did you replace it with a good SWITCHCRAFT jack or cheap Asian ebay junk? Use Switchcraft. Also use a right angled plug end on, well any guitar except a Strat. It reduces the strain on the jack.

Buzzing when not touching strings is common. Your wiring and pickups are acting as a radio receiver and picking up any RADIO frequencies RF caused by AC house wiring and devices: dimmers and fluorescent lights are heinous culprits in generating RF.

Ever hear overhead power lines buzz? That’s what your bass is picking up.

Shielding your cavities in your bass with metal foil greatly reduces RF interference making a quiet guitar. Just search “shielding” here and tons of info will come up.

It is normal on this instrument, which is why all metal parts are grounded.

use a right angled plug end on, well any guitar except a Strat

or any Ibanez SoundGear:

A 90 degree plug only reduces the strain if you loop it through the strap.
