East Coast Heat Wave!!

Sorry but I guess you have not heard about the monsoon season rains here. They usually start about now and run till September. Frequently the rain, which usually comes in the hottest part of the afternoon, only drops the temp by 5-10 sometimes 15 degrees. This means that we end up with temps around 100ish with that wonderful 85-90% humidity. That is the norm here for July, Aug and early Sept. Sometimes the rain does drop the temp a bit lower but frequently it does not. Sometimes the rains start as early as mid June.

To give you an idea of the sort of downpours we are talking about, lets just say that roads wash out to the extent that parts of town are not accessible. Summer before last I was washed in for four days. 2-3 days for the washes to stop running and another day or two for the bulldozers to clear the roads. I have had some real adventures with roads here becoming rivers.

The Sonoran Desert is the wettest desert around but most folks don't know that. Very different from places like Vegas.

Now that you mention it, I do remember one very rainy and muggy day I spent at Phantom Ranch in Early August...yuck! Gimme a dry heat any day!

Topped 100 here in Providence today, although I'm not sure by how much. The AC in our office building failed to kick on at 6:00 am, so when I got in at 8:00 it was still like a sauna.

Here in the apartment we have 3 (count 'em!) window AC units maxed. So it's pretty comfortable. But you walk outside and it's like wading through clam chowder! Plus there's an air quality warning (something like, "If you're outside, don't breathe").

It got to 101 F today in western PA. Unusually warm. It was actually hotter today in Pennsylvania than it was in Florida.


However, there's difference between the heat in the north and the heat in the south. The heat in the south is more of a straight on HEAT. The northern heat is filled with extreme humidity, much more so than in a state such as Florida. I'll deal with FLorida's heat wayyy before I deal with this damn humidity infested heat.

Yeah, that is funny. I was telling someone how I drove through the snow in Richmond with my WarWagon like a champ, and then I was like "Wait, this is summer, and there was like 2 feet of snow in January?"

2010 has been an Extreme Year. Maybe the XTREME '90s are coming back?

DO NOT MOVE TO VIRGINIA. We routinely have days where it's like 10,000% humidity, which makes the normal 99 degrees go up to like 1,000,007, and then air quality is so bad that going outside is like being hooked up to a ventilator delivering an ozone and sulphur dioxide slurry.

To be honest, not really. The weather as you approach the northeast quarter of north america becomes increasingly more extreme. Mild temperatures are very rare here, compared to other parts of the world, such as western europe or western north america (two that I have experienced). I spent a summer in vancouver and couldn't get over how absolutely mild it was all the time. Same with Netherlands - I've been there several times (the longest stay was 3 months) and the weather was similar to the west coast; mild. Whereas here we get dumped on in the winter and suffer through painfully hot and humid summers.

I have always wondered why people chose to settle here, as opposed to somewhere less extreme. If I could find a part of the world where the temperature is a consistent 22-23C, I would never leave. I hear some parts of Argentina are like that.
