You know, I've been lookin' for sumthin' to do since I don't play out much anymore. I've always admired Colonel Parker, though, so, maybe I'll become a band manager. Fifty percent of the gross should cover my services.
The Hubcaps are booked 5/21 at the Strawberry Festival in Morristown and on 5/28 at the Moose Lodge in Morristown. Our schedule is clear until then but April was pretty busy. Who can put together a GTG? Knoxville is the likliest of destinations, but if Motown is an option, give me some dates and I'll see what I can do. I have a friend and fellow bassist that works in a music store with a pretty large downstairs that could accomodate several of us.
By the way, I don't know if he's a TB member or not, but probably the most famous East Tennessee bassist would be Billy Greer of Kansas. He's from somewhere in the Surgoinsville/Rogersville area.

Awesome, make sure you come up and introduce yourself! This is the third year in a row we've played this gig, it is ALWAYS crowded, so if the tornados lay low for one evening it should be a great night!
Three good chances to hear Jeff play! Anybody else around the area going to hit one of the three gigs? Let's get a few of us out.

Primarily play a Dingwall, but I will bring the Ritter if anyone wants to play and see one. It really is a superb bass, but I think at some point every player finds his or her bass, and Dingwall is my choice of weapons, it just fits if you know what I mean.
I need a lefty 5 string with 5-on-a-side tuners. A Squier or Squier Affinity would be just fine, as well as knock-offs, or MIM or MIJ Fenders. Rosewood board and single coil pu or pups highly preferred. I'm trying to find something within a coupla hours driving distance of Chattanooga so that I can see in person which is the reason I'm posting this here. If you see one at your local store, pawn shop, or whatever, yell please.
Alrighty then! I just got back in from Maryville, where I heard Jeff Roller and Soul Driver play a set at Cancun there at Foothills Mall.
That place was packed! There was literally no room to sit anywhere in the restaurant. Soul Driver was playing in the outside patio area. We wound up having to sit in front of the left side main's folded horn. Ooowie! I did have some industrial ear plugs and put those in, but it was a serious chest massage.
Jeff was playing his burled top Dingwall as his only bass. That was the first time I'd seen one in person. They are beautiful instruments, and the fanned fret system gives those basses a huge voice. I remarked to Jeff that he knew how to take advantage of the dynamic range of the bass. He's a fingerstyle player- no pick. When he played big chords, strumming across the strings, the bass was thick and intensely loud.
He was playing through his Phil Jones stack. That's a lot of speakers. I had never seen a Phil Jones stack in person. After one particularly loud ending to a song, a breaker blew and killed the mains, so Jeff demonstrated the sound of the amp by itself. Quite nice. He was running the amp at about 50%. The cones were jumping. Very tight sounding stack.
Soul Driver is a three-piece classic rock/new country band, going on the selection that I heard. They are a lot of fun live. The crowd was sort of doing their own thing, as most crowds tend to do these days, but there was some good responses to the band here and there. I heard "Sweet Home Alabama", "Margaritaville", "Sweet Child of Mine", and a Keith Urban song, among others.
We left at the break before what probably would be their last set at around 9 PM. The med crews were already there working on people out front of the restaurant who'd overdone the margaritas and tequila shots. There was some serious drinking going on. Viva Cinco de Mayo!
Jeff is a very pleasant guy who played the heck out of that Dingwall tonight. We got to talk several different times and he even introduced me to the crowd as being a member of the Talkbass contingent, or something like that. Jeff, it was a pleasure to meet you! Nice hat, too. I do hope to get out again soon to hear you play, if I don't make it tomorrow night.
Oh yeah! I saw the band table taking a lot of pictures. Jeff, post a couple! And do tell them thanks for sharing the extra chairs with us.

Getting ready to turn in for the night, but I'm sure Jeff will be rolling in at the house sometime after midnight, even though he said he lives pretty close to the mall. It reminds me how hard the life of a regularly gigging band bassist can be, when you are bringing out your PA and gear and doing it all yourself with three members. It's a lot of work, and these days, it's not much money or glory. You have to love this stuff, have it in your soul. Most people will say they are bass players but don't want to put the hard work into it. I'm not sure I'm not in that category these days. Theatre shows are pretty danged easy in comparison. So, hats off to Jeff and the band for bringing live music to Maryvillle earlier tonight and tomorrow night.
We TB'ers who aren't playing should definitely get out more and support each other. I'm looking at me when I say that, for sure. I had a good time tonight!

We all try to post where and when we are performing so we can meet up as time allows. This group hasn't been established for very long, but we are growing. No firm plans for a GTG have been set yet, but I hear the drums beating.
It'll happen.

Last night, I was trying to imagine what the effect would have been if he'd played the pink-on-purple Ritter in front of the 24 (I think) aluminum cones in front of that wild bunch of margarita-and-tequila shot-swillin' Maryvillains! It would have been psycho-delic!
Geez - Gas is nearly 4 bucks a gallon and you guys have me considering a drive to Maryville tonight.
Richard, you ought to think about it! They are a very good band, worth the drive to hear. You could even email Jeff and tell him to bring the Ritter tonight instead of the SX's! It might be a bit saner evening. That crowd last night was seriously getting looped!

A bit of history: Confused is in the building that formerly housed "Lowell's Place" for a few years back in the early 2000's. It sat empty from 2004 to last year, when it was remodeled by the new owners. It is just up the hill on the left past Brown's Creek Shopping Center as you're going toward Townsend and the Smokies. Here's a Google Map link.
Anybody else thinking about going?

That is a beautiful Ritter Classic. I love that color. My best friend has had one made for me. I cannot wait to give it a go. But I won't even try til I can play it with justice. I,m a newbie but trying hard to learn. He put quite a bit of faith in me to learn to play Bass so I give it ll my effort and try to practice at least a few hours a day even here in the shop. I bring my AlvarezAEB5 with me and practice. Got a friend here who makes and sells Cigar box guitars, gave him a corner in my shop to sell them. So a few times a day we do a bit of a jam session. A couple of blues numbers. Different, to say the least.
