East Tennessee Talkbass

Had the opportunity to check out Scott with the State Street Rhythm Section last night with the wife and a few friends at Wild Wing Cafe. I didn't get to chat with Scott much, but did make his acquaintance right before they went on, and I didn't get to see much as we were around the corner in a booth, but the music was fantastic, and the dance floor was packed every time I looked over. Bass rig had a great tone, the bass was kicking in high gear the whole night, and entire band was tight. A great evening of music.

Nice to have met you!

We have a good number of dates coming up; we're presently on the books for 7 different Knoxville area clubs with 1 or 2 more in the background that will be added.

Appreciate your commentary on the tone of the bass - I've done a ****load of experimenting and tweaking to get just exactly what I want. And all of it, I mean all, is because of Talkbass. The only thing I own that I didn't buy because of TB is my bass itself, which I've owned since 1991. Nordstrand pickups? People rave about them on TB. Strings? Went to GHS flatwounds because of TB. I buy them from bassstringsonline.com, which I learned of on TB. My main GK head and the Ampeg backup amp? GK was bought used from Bass NW in Seattle, which I heard about on TB. Ampeg? Bought used on TB. Mesa cabinet? Bought used on TB. MXR Auto Q and OC-3 Boss pedals? Bought used on TB.

Like I said :)

I'm a fan.

Welcome Dan; hope you can relocate here; this area is great. As far as I know, the closest "bass" shop would be the Low End in Murfreesboro. Brian Barrett owns that shop and is great to deal with. He has his Low End basses along with tons of others including Ritter, Benavente, Warrior, Lakland, MTD'S, Roscoe, Fender, Fibenare, Fodera, and so many others new and used. He also has tons of new and used bass gear. Check out Brian's site here:

Low End is probably about 3 hours or so (estimate) from Knoxville. I have been there several times and actually bought and owned one of Brians' Low End Jazz 6 string basses. Top notch quality and a great guy to deal with.

Dan- If you do make the move to this area, be sure and let us ETTB'ers know. It's a great place to live. There isn't quite as much live music as there once was, same as everywhere pretty much, but still quite a lot for those who want to keep busy. For example, check out Scott with the State Street Rhythm Section!

We don't really have good music stores in this area anymore, as far as places that stock the gear that is en vogue. Most of us share here on ETTB what is working for us, and we do the occasional get-together to try out gear. Then we either buy it online or from each other. It works well in this day and age to do it that way. And that's what most of us do.

There aren't any good local stores left that have decent bass gear, IMHO. As bass10bfb noted above, the closest really good bass-only shop is The Low End, in Murfreesboro, TN. That's definitely close enough for a road day trip to visit Brian and the shop of wonders.

Probably the closest really good general music store with some selection of bass gear is Corner Music, in Nashville. One can hit both The Low End and Corner Music in one day if you get an early start.

Knoxville has only one good local music store (of a sort), and that is Pick'n'Grin in Bearden. Over the years, we had Chapman Hwy. Guitars, and Lynn's Guitars, but both those are long defunct. I don't know if any of us count Guitar Center as a good store, but we have one of those.

If you do move to Gatlinburg, The Music Outlet is the main music store in Sevier County. It's a bit of everything, but does orient toward the bluegrass and country scene, and most of the players in the music theaters in Sevier County go there for some of their needs.

Everybody else- if you have some personal favorite little shops in your own towns, do chime in!

Got to see some interior shots of the new Scruffy City Hall and will get to play there for a private party this Sunday. Layout looks interesting, though I wonder about the acoustics with the multi-level thing. Those downtown shotgun-style rooms can be rough, but the open second floor may actually help.

I like the Music Room in the Homberg/Bearden area. I've got them keeping an eye out for a used hollow body.

Hey bass bro's!! If you guys know any guitar players looking for a killer rig, I have one for sale/trade. I included the link here. It is an Orange 2x12 cab and a Blackstar HT100H Tube head.
I am playing some guitar in church now, but this is OVERKILL for sure. It is better and easier for me to run direct thru a pedal.

Hey, guys. I'm looking to trade a black SWR 4X10 grill for a chrome one.

I have one of each on my rig of (1) Goliath III (chrome) and (1) Workingman's 4X10T (black), but I want a more unified look, and prefer the chrome.

Anyone have one and the interest to swap?

I came across something online tonight that suggested the Baker-Peters lounge/restaurant in the Cedar Bluff part of K-ville has closed recently. But it wasn't definitive. Can a ETTB'er corroborate this?

I never was a regular at Baker-Peters Jazz Club, nor really any venue in the Knoxville area, but I did go see a number of bands play there in the late 90's-early 00's. If it's gone, it's a loss to the K-ville music scene.

No website. I've been in there a couple times, but it's been a while back. I don't know how active they are in trading. The FB page hasn't been updated in a while, and they have no website. It's good to hear from a couple of ETTB'ers that they like dealing with Music Room. I'll drop in there soon and see also.

Confirmed. Was talking with Rusty Holloway last week - he and his trio regularly played there on Thursday evenings - he informed me that they had indeed closed. I only went there a few times, but Baker Peters was just so convenient, although a bit pricey. There are still a few places in town to catch some jazz - The Square Room at Market Square and the Bistro at the Bijou are two that I'm aware of.

I'll say this:
I used to have to turn down jobs in NYC and I got to work from home.
Well, I still work for NYC and San Fran and anywhere else when the jobs come my way, but I haven't had the pleasure of turning down anything...including accepting rates that I charged 14 years ago!
Ouch.

But I've never had a "real" job and have always freelanced. So who knows how I've done as well as I have?
