Ebay buyer from Hell

My experience of ebay has changed over the last few years. It used to be that it automatically supported a buyer over a seller but that seems to have changed in the last few years - particularly if you have a case against a Power Seller. It's reputation has changed too. In the early days it used to be thought of as a haven for dodgy, second rate or even stolen goods. Now it's a viable alternative to amazon and traditional retail companies for just about anything.

Ebay makes its money from successfully completed trades so sellers making 10s or even 100s of trades per day (or small numbers of relatively high value trades) will always get their support unless strong proof is offered that shows they are in the wrong.

You got lucky, my buyer just twisted the interface I sold to him and demands a refund. It was in perfect condition when shipped, box is in perfect condition, so that only leaves him damage the unit. From now on I'm only buying from feebay, and sell only locally through other means. I'm thinking of closing my account with them, I'm mad.

Errors in description by sellers aside, I've seen a few threads on various fora about kit getting deliberately damaged by a disgruntled buyer.
Agreed. I'm not sure exactly when... but at some point it became easy for buyers to extort discounts from sellers after the sale.
Basically.... you just need to ask for less of a discount than they'll eat on the return shipping anyways. Had this happen to me a few times. One guy swore there was a big scratch that definitely wasnt there before... another tried to say that the neck was so bad that it needed an $80 setup... which he of course had done immediately.... and didn't have a receipt for.
The worst part is that you cant leave a neg feedback for a buyer.. and ebay wont put in a system where it documents how many times a buyer has had an "issue" or filed against sellers.
I ate $100 on one of them but lucked out on the other as I was able to dispute it and the ebay employee that I dealt with said that the buyers history showed that they had filed or fished for a discount on about 20 transactions in the previous 90 days. I did some more homework on the guy and it looks like that was his business. He'd bid low on items.. then fish a discount after the fact... then relist them at full price. Essentially, he was just bumping his margin.
Sucks because ebay was great at one point, but not anymore.

Some people are never happy or don't read and then when they realize the same thing you tried to describe then it's all your fault because of their ignorance and arrogance. Sometimes you just cannot win man.

The OP's story is why I pretty much refuse to ever ship any guitar or bass. I will list instruments on Reverb, but it's for local pickup only these days. Despite that, whenever I have listed instruments for local pickup only, I would still get a lot of messages asking me to ship the guitar, and I politely reply I cannot and explain my reasons why.

I don't have the desire, time or energy to potentially deal with the type of person the OP had to deal with (and am shocked the OP actually took the bait and engaged with the guy). Also, how I describe the instrument may not be the way the buyer interprets it as they read it.

Sure, it may take longer to sell by only selling it locally, but the buyer actually has the chance to see the instrument in person and decide for themselves. No arguments or claims that the item wasn't as described, no claims that it was damaged in shipping, etc.

If you don’t have a shipping confirmation and you don’t get paid in cash, buyers can still open a claim and say they never received the bass. PayPal will ask you for the shipping confirmation and you will have none.

I have shipped to holding companies in the past and it’s not an uncommon thing as some countries really have a poor selection of gear. But the issue is always - what happens when it’s damaged by the shipping company.

What does this have to do with selling something face to face/in person?!

Reverb has a button/option that the buyer had to click confirming that the item was picked up in person, which immediately releases funds of they pay with a card. I will not hand over the instrument until they've acknowledged through Reverb that they picked up the instrument. If they don't like that they don't have to buy the item and can look elsewhere.

In the past I've also taken very detailed pictures of the packing process of instruments (and video in some cases) just in case there is anise later on, but luckily I've never had to deal with a buyer filing claim when I used to ship instruments.

Look at the section “What isn’t covered by seller protection”. The third item -
  • Items picked up locally or in person.

PayPal Seller Protection for Merchants – PayPal US

I'm not talking about PayPal, I'm talking about Reverb. Either way, I've never had and issue and have received funds immediately. You can also pay with a credit card through Reverb without going through PayPal. I sold a guitar locally, met the guy, he paid with a credit card he had on file with Reverb, marked that the item was picked up in person/locally and I saw the funds right away. Done deal. Of course cash is always preferred.

I had a guy who was interested in a high end acoustic I was selling. We actually met twice so he could check out the guitar. He made an offer that I politely declined and the guy got pretty agitated. Then he contacted me a few weeks later and wanted to check out the guitar again, made the same offer which I again politely declined. So several days later he contacted me again and said he'd buy the guitar for my asking price but wanted to pay via Venmo or PayPal. I told him the sale was cash only. Needless to say he didn't get the guitar and a couple weeks later I sold it to someone who showed up, liked the guitar, handed over the cash and that was it.

Do not accept Venmo for goods. Unless they've changed their terms of service it states that it's only for personal transactions. There was a scam going on awhile ago mostly with camera gear for whatever reason, they'd buy the item and pay with Venmo. Sometimes multiple transactions because on Venmo's limit and then you never see the person again but they file a claim with Venmo and get their money back.

View attachment 3157482 So I wanted to share this story with some fellow talkbassers.
Backstory:
I have used eBay for about 8 years activley buying and selling basses. I have a 277 preferred seller, 100% rating. I set up all of my own instruments and am fairly adept at doing so.

I posted a Marcus Miller V7 on eBay for a killer price. It was in great condition. I really wanted a shortscale bass because my body is not was it used to be.
A fellow from Chicago bought it. I immediately shipped out. The Saturday He received it I received a PM telling me my setup was terrible and I was stupid for not sending him the hex keys. (Honestly I had forgotten to send him the keys but I never said I’m the description it included hex keys). I, like most other people have a set of metric hex keys so I never utilized the ones send with it.
I let the buyer know I would send him the keys on Monday even though I probably shouldn’t have since he was so rude.
Next message; he asks if it has a warranty and makes a comment in the area of “I thought you were a good seller so I thought you would, but go figure”. (Really? I warranty from a used private seller? It didn’t have a warranty in the first place because I didn’t buy direct)Or something of that sort. I told him politely I thought he was rude and if he needed something he should ask people nicely.
He continued to go off and call me stupid, don’t know what I’m doing...etc.
I thought the funny thing was that he refrred to the setup of the G string as the “high B”.
At this point I’m like “this guy is something else”.
He threatened to file a return and a case because he didn’t have the proper .88 cent hex key. I told him I didn’t accept returns unless the bass was damaged and that he could not return it because he didn’t like my set up.

Side note: I prefer low action. But as most people know, some jazz style bridge saddles tend to slide down a little bit on occasion.
I told him I wasn’t going get into an argument with him because I thought he was a kid.
I would’ve swore it was an entitled rude kid. He got angry and said he was 58 and that I was probably a kid.
After all of this, me being the humble seller I am, I would still send him the key I used. From there he told me to “shove the keys up my a**” and kept calling me a “monkey boy”. (I know right??)
I told him sounds like a sad human being and to get his own keys and to enjoy the bass. He continued with more messages telling call me a “broke b****” and that he would let all of eBay know what a “goofy f***” I was.
At this point I don’t care. About five days later I see a return request on my eBay dashboard and a negative review left on my profile. The reason for the negative review was to the tune of “he said it was set up and I didn’t like his set up”.
Really dude?
Then for his return he said “I was just changing the string and noticed that the tuning post was bent”.
EERRRRKK.. hold on. You “just noticed the tubing post was bent”? Like that’s some little detail.
The bass was 100% perfect when It left and he commented on how everything else looked okay.
It’s painfully obvious that the dude purposely bent the tuning post to try and get me to return on it.
What an absolute psycho.
I called eBay and got it resolved. They saw the threatening messages and what a nutcase this guy is. Removed the negative review and resolved the case. The guy I spoke to was very generous. I will include the pictures that this absolute moron sent of the tuning post he bent on purpose.
I honesty think it’s hilarious and karma takes care of people.
I have rarely had any problems with anyone on eBay but this dude, this dude takes the all out gold cup for biggest idiot on eBay. Let me know your thoughts everyone. Cheers.
I used to help run a small operation on Amazon/Ebay and a few other places...I know how frustrating cheap pricks can be. This story had me steamed, but I'm so glad it had a happy ending.

When I ship an expensive piece of gear that might see some damage along the ride, I always document the process of packing it. I mail the pictures to the buyer and have him agree that this is packed well enough and ready to be sent.
I've had no trouble with sellers in the recent past, but whenever something like that occurs, I at least have the pictures and the mails to show to any authority involved.

Sadly, it happens on TB too.

Yep, I'm dealing with one now. Guy was not happy and said there were problems with the bass(although none when I shipped and I think it was a case of buyer's remorse)so I sent him a FedEx label and told him that the shipping cost for the return would be deducted from the refund. I also told him that if I found no problems with the bass I would deduct the shipping to him also. He didn't like that, so he filed a claim with PayPal and I accepted the return with the understanding that he was to pay for the return. I then immediately cancelled the FedEx label. The next day he shipped the bass with my FedEx label that was cancelled. It was accepted at the counter but was immediately tagged as Return to Sender because of the cancelled label. I contacted PayPal and told them that he used a label that was cancelled and they reopened the case. Then I found out that he packed the box with extra weight in an attempt to up the charges I would potentially receive. Up from 26lbs to 53lbs! I informed PayPal of that also and they are now reviewing the case for fraud and will hopefully deny the buyer's claim. When this is over I plan to leave this a..hole a well thought out negative review.

Isnt it crazy how shady people are when you have their shipping address? I had a guy once try to scam me out of like $3 on ebay. Yesssss, three bucks. He was a huge jerk about it and spouting off with threats of filing a claim and negative reviews and all that, a bunch of vulgarity and personal attacks of course. So I replied with "care to look at the return address on it?"
This was about the point that he realized that I had shipped it from 15 minutes away and had his home address. He immediately stopped and never replied again.
