[Stranger Danger]

Not sure why but the first song I played was Funkifize by Tower of Power. 5 times in a row in the 5 different pickup configurations. I think my favorite positions are 1 and 4. For you other HH dudes what position are you liking most?

I am a 1 and 4 guy myself. 3 has its uses as well. 2 is too scooped for me and 5 is too boomy (although it does interesting things with an envelope filter).

It’s shocking to me how different 4 and 2 are, 4 is so punchy I love it, I never thought about trying effects with 5, sounds like a fun project for the weekend

4 sounds like a really hot p bass to me.

I bought my one and only Stingray in 1996 and played it a ton the first 10 years. I took several years off from gigging and when I started playing again the last several years I've been favoring my Fenders. I've been on and off with it over the years, sometimes I really dig it, sometimes I don't and want a P or a J. Its a 3 band 4 string and initially had the weak G string issue real bad, I replaced the preamp with the SD Basslines when it came out and the problem pretty much went away.
I recently through a set of LaBella 760fl's on it and I'm really digging it again, no aggressive twang, just thick with that burpey edge. Anyway, that's my Stingray story

I feel like I remember reading in on of these threads late one night over the summer some one mentioning a “secret” position between the 4 and the 5th position, is this true or is my memory playing tricks on me? I tried it, and it sounds like a single coil sound to me, maybe just one of the coils, I need to try it with headphones on to get a better impression

That was me. I’m my 5H Special, if you go to the middle position and move the selector towards either one or three there is an in between sound that is pretty cool. I guess it activates the filter or something.

I like the twang and burp and snarl and snap and bark.

That’s cool! Thanks for clearing that up. I think I need to start planning my 5H move...it will need to be a whacky color since my 4 is natural

Agreed. Ive had several HH's, and that neck pickup is too far forward to be P ish, SG is more like it

Man I love White and Mint together. I have a Cream and Mint Jazzmaster but I am thinking it's time to add a White and Mint Bass to the equation..... Come to think of it I have zero MusicMan basses right now hmmm......

Last Wednesday a beautiful SR-Special 4 HH arrived.

Now us married guys-- or those soon to be married-- should know that it is very important for your wife be onboard with such a large purchase using family money. As such, I let her choose the color of my new Stingray. Her choice, hands down, was Burnt Apple and the order was placed. Looking at the photos online is a tough way to get a real idea what that color is really like in person, and it looked pretty subdued. However, in person that finish REALLY dances under the lights!

As much as I tried, I just couldn't get past the flashy finish; not to mention the dark position markers on a dark colored neck (some necks look darker than others...). My loving wife LOVED the finish, but could tell that I wasn't happy with it. So, I had to use the advice I gave BassBuzzRS (previous page) and reluctantly returned the bass to the dealer. Exercising patience can be tough on the spirit when talking bass guitars, but as noted-- it usually pays off in the end.

Now I am awaiting the arrival of a Classic Natural finished SR4HH with a rosewood fingerboard. Looking at the stock photos, it appears the position markers stand out much better on the rosewood board, and the bonus of rosewood adding a little mellower edge to the tone is a plus in my book.

Playing the Burnt Apple SR was a real joy compared to my older SR. The new EQ really does help to shape the tone in a way my old SR couldn't. Some of the tones were still pretty bright, so I went to our local shop and picked up a set of DR Nickel Lo-Rider strings... thankfully I didn't install them on the Burnt Apple SR and have them ready for the new one

What song did I use to test each setting? Journey's Don't Stop Believing

Favorite settings? Honestly, I like each of the 5 settings. Having to choose, I'd say the neck (#5) was my least favorite setting, and the bridge (#1) with the treble rolled off was my favorite. Granted, I only played around with it for a few hours at home, so who knows what will happen when playing with the band...

Thankfully I have a lot of work to keep me busy between now and the estimated end of week delivery on the new Ray-- the waiting is the hardest part!

She sure was pretty! Simply too much Ginger, and not enough Marry Ann for my liking~

Interesting how the pickguard differences between the 4 & the 5 can make the same finish look so different. I ordered this one:

The black pickguard covers twice as much of the front surface on the 5 as it does the 4. The metallic red finish seems to peek out around the corners more. I like it a lot.
