So... as I mentioned earlier I may go down to one bass...due to my Special being so special, I’ve put my Old Smoothie in the closet with my P Bass and both are on a playing ban!

This is a test (an easy one I think..) to show that I can get by with just the Special and the occasional use of foam under the strings. If all goes well I’ll sell the other two as my wife and I could do with some extra cash flow. The 66 P Bass is in near mint condition, so it’s a fair few extra dollars we’re talking here...

With just one bass kicking around it looks like the Cobalt flats may be back on the Special sometime in the next few weeks

I’ll be eagerly awaiting the results of this test. I think I know what the outcome will be but I’ll wait and see what happens.
And yes Slinky Cobalt Flats are a perfect fit for these Specials.

Interesting. When the regular cobalts first came out I gave them a shot and I literally ripped them off after a half an hour and put the regular slinkys back on I hated them. Just too bright and mid-scooped. Wonder if the flats are any different.

Me too. Hated the round wound cobalts. The flats are incredible.

I’ll just say this , if I had to go down to one bass, my Special5 would be the one left standing .
After acquiring my 2 MusicMan basses, everything else was sold off ( except a Sire V3-5 for when it’s not wise to take the Musicmans). Honestly, to me , nothing else compares without going to a boutique builder. And I don’t see any need to do that as I feel I already have top quality and my needs met.
These basses have really stopped my gas.

As for the vintage P, well there comes a point when it either going to be a kept to pass down or you know it’s time to cash out and reap the financial gain. I’m not going to say that a Special can exactly replicate a vintage P tone. But it does get you a nice P tone. Exactly what vintage ? I’m not sure. Don’t think it really matters. Good P tone is good P tone.

Actually, I’m forgetting about the Steinberger Spirit that I use when I go to hotels. It only comes out a few times a year when I go away with work...so it doesn’t count, I stil feel like I’m going down to one bass! But like your Sire it could be used when the Special is too special to take out.

Owning a vintage P is a nightmare when you’re not rich. Every time I own them I just feel like they are on loan. When I bought my apartment I let go of a Pre CBS P Bass, Jazz Bass, Guitar and amps, plus some other very cool gear, which I knew would always have to go eventually. This time around my 66 has always felt like it’s only around until we need the cash. So I either get rich, or that feeling sticks!

Luckily I’m in no hurry just yet, but I’m keen to get this test going asap, even if it lasts a few months, in fact that’d be even better. (Anyone would think I’m into pain as pleasure!)

Thanks, it’s not too bad, my 2017 one is oddly light for a pre-special, only 8 and a half pounds so I reckon this one’s only about 9.

Congrats! Also, that headstock looks like it has a little bit of fun figuring... How does the back of the neck look? Mine is very "plank of wood" plain (which is fine - Nice straight grain) but I know sometimes EBMM basses end up with bonus figure in the necks.

I’ve been having great fun A/B-ing these two.

The special sounds considerably different, even when unplugged, it’s much more resonant.

Yes it does have a tiny touch of figuring round the edges, mostly on the headstock, which the last one didn’t.

Lemme preface this by saying that I realize more than anyone that I'm mediocre at best(plus I'm super out of shape, so I'm sorry you gotta see that), but we are fairly popular in Indy and we play a lot. Fortunately, the rest of the band is pretty good, so I can bask in my okayness. Another note about this clip, I used a chorus setting from the Strymon Mobius, which I just got right before I headed to the gig, so it's a pretty terrible chorus sound. Obviously, the camera was on my side of the stage, mainly because it's my camera, LOL, so it's a skewed viewpoint.

The 5HH is way better at being a bass than I am at playing it, but I have a good time...

Damn! You have good eyes! LOL! I've got my SRS 4HH and I keep a Sterling Ray5 as "just in case" or if we do something in an oddball tuning. That Sterling is actually insanely LOUD! It doesn't sound anywhere close to the SRS's, but it's WAY louder, LOL!

I'm gonna be the odd man out here, as my main setting is Position 3. I like both pups full on.

The other thing about that clip was I was using a new pedalboard preamp, a TrickFish Trilobite, which I'd just received last Thursday. It's so good! Everything on the bass was flat. Sometimes I wish there was an active/passive bypass on these. Ah well. Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on my playing and my physical appearance. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I'm not trying to become the stereotypical blubbery bass player...

You are way too hard on yourself. You look great (the bass isn’t so shabby either). That is a tough camera angle on anyone but no apologies needed for anything!

It sounds good too, from what I can hear on my phone speakers on my lunch break.
