EBMM StingRay Special Club

I’m really enjoying my Ray Special 5H. The playability and sound is as good as it gets. It may even be my favorite neck I’ve ever played. What’s everyone’s experience with the new lightweight tuners on the Specials? I’m giving mine more time before I form an opinion on the tuners. They’re definitely different from the Hipshot Ultralites that I’ve been using for years.

I prefer these tuners to the Hipshots. I’ve had a lot of Hipshots and the main advantage was weight for me. These tuners are light as well and perform better for me.

It’s funny because in all the promotion for the Specials, the fluted tuner isn’t mentioned but these are definitely fluted and help increase the downward break angle. FMIC actually did that with their new Americans too and they made a big deal about it in their promotion.

EBMM basses have included fluted tuners for many years. It’s not something new with the Specials.

I love the feel of the tuners.

Too late for that, I've had it since November but only really got down to concentrating on getting a great setup recently - I'd posted about how it didn't jive with my playing style, and would take some time to get comfortable with, so I happily went along using my G&L as my main and only occasionally pulled out the Ray. I've changed my style a bit, and want to use it now. It's going to the store where I got it for the tech to go over it. From there, we'll see.

I like the tuners also. I have no desire to put on Hipshots as I’ve done with some other basses.

They feel good, work well and there is no neck dive on either of my Specials.

They are different from anything on an EBMM bass than before - the updated Bongo and the Reflex tuners were smaller I think.

I find the new ones extremely precise and feel great to use, having more meat to them. However they don't change the look of the guitar from the front or back - very clever!!

I think you should contact EBMM Customer Services as there sounds a problem there.

I'm not sure if you've suffered those ludicrously low Arctic temperatures where you are but a couple of years back in a less severe cold spell in the US a lot of people were complaining about fret sprout on new instruments of various makes in shops. So that may be well a factor.

Just so you know other parts of the world are having odd weather - it's over 20 degrees today here - and still February - seems the UK has got an African airstream - when we should have rain and snow and mid US has had an Arctic airstream!! Who would have guessed!!

Anyway I hope you manage to get it sorted - a neck shim may help you get much lower action.

Yes, they are new. All I was sharing was that the previous tuners were also tapered/fluted. All EBMM tuners have been tapered for some while. That’s not the new feature — it’s the light weight.
