Mmm.....As soon as someone states that a Special sounds better than any 2 band Stingray whether it be pre EB or a Classic, you just know it is time to move on.........Amen!

Guys, fret sprout is just a nature of the beast, could happen on any bass. Do you guys oil your fretboard if it’s too dry? Keep it in a good environment? I always keep my basses in a case when I don’t use them and I have no issues. That said, if your brand new bass comes with too many issues, return it and replace it. If you’re buying when testing in the store, make sure you grab the one you like the best.

I'm bummed, first band practice since I got my Special and I won't have it with me. Oh well, I wanted to get it in the shop before I sell my other bass. I get my SR back on the 20th.
I bought some DR low riders for Lull's shop to put on there. Never tried them before. We'll see how I like them. Also never had a bass with SS frets. Wish I could AB it against nickel. Not really possible for me of course but I doubt I'd tell the difference. It is nice though that I feel like I don't have to be worried about wearing the frets out as much. Heck, maybe I'll start using steel strings too!

I love the DR Lo Riders on my Special. Sound and feel great. My band tunes a half step down so the extra tension helps. In fact I’m gigging tonight with the SRS. Looking forward to it. Third gig with the Special.
The stainless steel frets are different. Definitely tangier. I am also toying with the idea of trying SS strings. I recently put on some SIT Powerwounds and although they are NPS, they are very bright and I am kind of liking that sound. It's like Dave Schools' sound with Widespread Panic. He uses D'Addario Pro Steels on a Modulus but i can get close.

Burnt Apple was my first choice but I had a GC 20% off coupon that was about to expire and the Burnt Apple was not in stock so I went with the classic combo of black and maple. No regrets but I’m I little jealous when I see the pics of the Burnt Apple.
I’ll be taking my D800+ instead of the Orange tonight to lighten the load. Both heads sound awesome through the new 2X15 and the venue has a full PA anyway.

Absolutely blown away how this bass sounds and plays. And the weight! 9lb’s for 5er HH! That’s outrageously light. I’m sure you all appreciate my wife’s taste in pillow cases too.
Here’s a pic of the electronics for those interested - super tidy braiding of the pickup wiring. Interesting that they have both the HH and H wiring configurations catered for right on the PCB. That’s good news for me as I chose the HH just in case I wanted to get a new pick guard with just the Bridge H. Unsure how to wire the switch for that one though.
Sound wise, the preamp/pickup config seems to split the difference between the old school two band with Alnico and older 3 band with alnico and ceramic. It’s really tasty although I do have a John a East MM 3 band idly sitting in the parts bin...I can see another pick guard with that attached and a Nordstrand 5.2MM in the distant future.
Only sad thing is that being a numpty I went to change strap pins to be strap locks and snapped the head of the screw off putting the bridge end pin in - they took a lot of torque going all the way out and in so it’s not that surprising but damn it. So she won’t be seeing any gigging until a luthier friend gets a hollow core screw extractor. Gutted about that but oh well, still plays beautifully and looks gorgeous.

I’m really enjoying utilizing both pickups on my 5HH. 2nd gear is so sweet with bell like highs in the upper register when playing chords . The sustain is amazing , even with Cobalt Flats.
I’ve heard so many people complain that Stingrays are good for one tone . Not so with these Special HH models. Between the preamp, Neo pickups, and the switching capabilities , there is really no tone that I’m after that I can’t achieve.
Honestly , my other basses aren’t getting played much. I try but they don’t stay in my hands long. I’m always wishing I was playing my Special so back in the cases they go.
I’m about to do a cross country move from California back to Florida after a month stopover in DC. Everything but the Special might be getting sold . Once I get to Florida I'm probably going to pick up another Special 5 and call it done.
The Caprice is great but I’ve always wished it was a 5 string.

Friday night we opened up for the band, Pablo Cruise (remember them?) some of you may not… LOL! We were playing the Asparagus Festival in Stockton, CA. at the San Joaquin County Fair Grounds. So when I got to the stage they showed me my backline which was the Ampeg SVT stack. in 41 years of playing I have never played one and I got to say it’s very impressive. For a moment, only a moment, I considered with the committee in my head about picking up one of these babies (NOT A BABY). Then I thought, back to reality, that my Markbass stuff is where I’m going to focus my attention. I love MB amps. For most gigs, which are clubs, I simply use my Mini CMD 121P with the extension cab the New York 121. I have also used this combination at some festivals and it was completely fine, of course running through the house for support. I also have a Little Mark III that I’ll throw under a cab of my choice when I want to have a bigger sound. Anyway, the Gallien Krueger on the left was Pablo Cruise’s bassist amp. I’m sure it sounded fine for him. I don’t know as we left right after our set. Oh and to stay on topic, I used my SRS4H. The bass just kills! I love it a little more every day. It’s funny, over time as I play it, it feels like it’s teaching me. One thing I’m learning is that the bass with one pickup/eq has a very wide array of tones. It’s me that has to figure out how to get to those tones. Have a great day. We’re playing Earth Day Festival today in Stockton. I’ll be using my SRS with my mini MB combo.
