I wasnt considering buying a MM Stingray until i tested the HH one. Even i like the distictive sound of the bridge humbucker, sometimes i find it too aggresive. Besides the HH option i was convinced buying it for the neck.

I didnt liked the neck humbucker alone by the way at position 1. However when blended at positions 2 and 4 its another story.

I am new to the Stingray world and an amateur bass player with no big experience, so sorry if my question irrelevant on advance

I wonder if there is a radical difference between rosewood and maple necks in same model Stingrays? In Fender basses there is almost no tonal difference, so i wondered if its different in Stingrays.

And about battery life of Stingrays, i saw the previous owner of my bass placed a sticker on the battery that indicates which month he put the battery in (actually good idea isnt it?). It was pointing October, so also depending on the playing frequency it can last several months as it seems.

Hey Specialists-

So I nabbed (and just returned) the used aqua blue 5H some of us were eyeing.

It is GORGEOUS and nearly unplayed.

A couple issues. Battery compartment looks like someone pried it w a screwdriver. Still works but rough. The neck is off center (middle string not centered down dots) which can be tweaked fairly easily as has previously been discussed.

I had intended to do a neck swap w my ivory 5HH but for the time being changed my mind (too many other things in play at moment). I thought I might want a 5H but for me there was not enough tonal variation from HH to justify.

Anyway I just dropped it at GC in Sherman Oaks. It was $1500 used. I don’t know how long it will stay so clean (has case candy etc) but just a heads up. If I did not have a Special that I already love this would have stayed with me.

Took two bad pics in parking lot to show sparkle finish and the neck thing.

Oh wow, the GC thing is quite the gamble but that price made it worth the try. Glad you got it off your back. Ebony board on ivory would look awesome though you’re right

Having had both maple and ebony, not a radical difference. The ebony seemed a little warmer to me kinda (tiny bit). As a dude who usually prefers a maple neck, I didn’t totally love the way the black dots worked with the roasted maple. If they ever offered a SR with the same vintage tint matte finish they use in the Cutlass/Caprice (I think they did a mint green SR like this in 16-17 ish but with the older pre, 6 bolt neck, heavier hardware) I would bite. Maybe a BFR release? Maybe with ivory white and tort guard??? Just trying to speak it into existence

I wish we could track how far this bass has travelled. It started life in CA after all.

You dropped into the StingRay Special Club — “Special” being the designation for new line of StingRays launched in mid-2018. Your bass looks like a StingRay Classic. Very nice, but not a Special.

Reference the H vs HH, I have SRS 5H and SRS 4HH. I haven’t decided if I want the 5HH instead but the real advantage to me with the H......is not having to drastically change eq settings on amp or board. If I had to have just one bass to cover all right now-it would be the 5HH because it literally can do it all close enough

It lacks low mids and doesnt sound punchy at flat EQ. Treble and high mid frequency are far more dominant, low end is also there but not so focused as highs. Its a common issue i guess.

Not trying to get a P bass sound from the Stingray by the way, i got a P bass for that.
Just trying to learn how to use my bass effectively and how should i do the EQ for blues and 70s fingerstyle funk?

I’m curious, how many SRS owners also use an outboard preamp/DI pedal between their bass and amp and what y’all are using? Has the SRS changed that? Thanks!

I have the Ampeg SCR-DI in both of my rigs. I used to just have a regular DI but I wanted to have some more "weight" to my tone and the Ampeg delivers. Works great for amp-less gigs too.

I’m running 4th position (second from the closest to the headstock) with bass at about 85%, mids about 60%, and treble at about 40% and playing finger style to MJ’s off the wall and getting a killer tone

Haven't had any issues with either. Solid units that give a respectable Ampeg sound.

If I were to take a guess, I'd say he meant "the real advantage to me with the HH......is not having to drastically change eq settings on amp or board." and "H" was a typo. Instead of changing the eq drastically, he just switches the pickup positions?

Just my guess, I could be wrong.

I thought the same thing, but I'm not sure. Having a powerful active EQ, it could be actually easier for some people to deal with just one pickup instead of two.
